What will I need?
Eyeshadow Primer. My personal favorite is the Urban Decay Primer Potion (UDPP) available at any Sephora for about $11. However, any MAC paint pot in a color close to your skin tone will also work just fine.
2 warm taupe-gray eyeshadows: a lighter one, and a darker one. Some good ones are MAC Copperplate, MAC Omega or MAC Orb. It all depends upon the color or your skin and which works best for you. Go for a shade that is slightly lighter than your skintone, and a shade that is slightly darker than your skintone.
1 matte eyeshadow to use as a highlight. Some good highlight colors for this are MAC's Malt, Bisque, Bamboo, or any comparable color.
Black gel eyeliner. MAC's Blacktrack fluidline works great, and L'oreal's H.I.P line has a great black gel liner as well. You can pick the latter up at any drug store for under $10 USD.
White eyeliner. MAC's eye kohl in Fascinating is absolutely beautiful and works great for this!
Eyelash curler.
Lash-lengthening mascara. There are a million out there, but I use good old CoverGirl Lash Blast.
What should I do first?
Begin by spreading a thin layer of the eyeshadow primer or base of your choice all over your eyelid. If you are using UDPP, be extra careful to use only a very small amount. With these types of products, a little bit certainly goes a long way. If you applied too much, blot away the excess and allow the product to set on your lids.
Take a soft fluffy brush and swirl it in the lighter of the 2 taupe shadows you have chosen. Very lightly, dust the color over your eyelids going slightly above the crease. Be sure to blend the color outward to avoid any harsh lines.
Using the same brush, swirl it into the darker taupe shadow. Beginning at the outer corner of your eye, very lightly swirl the brush in small circular motions about 2/3 of the way over your lid. Dust some of the darker color into the crease of your eye, adding more to the outer corner of your eye than the inner.
Using a clean blending brush, blend the darker taupe and lighter taupe together. Blend the darker shadow in the crease of your eye up and outward much like you did with the lighter shadow in step 2 to avoid harsh lines. Remember, Kim's eye makeup is always very soft looking, so blend, blend, blend!
For this step, feel free to use the same blending brush you used for step 4. Gently wipe away the excess shadow onto a tissue or towel, first. Lightly swirl the blending brush in your highlight color and dust the shadow onto your brow bone. If you are unsure where your brow bone is, dust the color underneath your eyebrow and blend downwards into the taupes until the colors meet seamlessly.
Using a small, stiff angled brush, apply the black gel eyeliner from the inner corner of your top lashline to the outer corner. Make the line a bit thicker towards the inner corner of your eye and let it taper and thin as it reaches the outer corner of your eye.
Apply the white eyeliner to your bottom waterline. If you are unsure of what the waterline is, it is the pink "rim" that touches the eyeball.
Once you are certain your gel liner has dried/set, curl your top lashes for about 30 seconds per eye.
Apply plenty of mascara. For this look, I always use at least 2 coats of mascara on both the top and bottom lashes.
Voila! You have a soft elegant look that can work for both day and night.
Remember that makeup is something to be experimented with, but something that can always be fixed up or changed. If you do not get it right the first time, try again! This look is quick and easy enough that you can play with it - make it more dramatic, tone it down or even add a pop of color! Have fun with it and enjoy your new Kim Kardashian inspired look!
