American Idol champ David Cook and former contestant Kimberly Caldwell are apparently an item. David Cook asked Kimberly Caldwell out to dinner on live television (in the presence of Justin Guarini and David Archuleta). Caldwell had been a fan of Cook all season, and he wanted to thank her by taking her out. While a budding romance looks promising, it is too early to tell if it will last.

It could go either way. When asked about her American Idol experience, Kimberly Caldwell expressed regret that she hadn't been more focused. I liked her back in Season 2, but she had never really performed to her potential on American Idol. Being only 21, it was just a question of maturity. She may have grown up since then. David Cook seems very grounded and mature (as seen in his brotherly relationship with David Archuleta), so it is possible that it could turn into something serious.

On the other hand, Kimberly Caldwell also confessed, "I'm obsessed with David Cook. I want to make out with him...a lot. And probably will."¹ While I agree that David Cook is handsome, a lasting romance needs more than just physical attraction. Besides, it probably wasn't the smartest decision to advertise this in a public interview!

Kimberly Caldwell and David Cook: Other American Idol romances?

There has never been a serious intra-Idol romance. There were rumors about Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini in Season 1, but they were unsubstantiated. Season 2's Corey Clark confessed to an affair with Paula Abdul, but his tell-all reeked of tabloid opportunism. In Season 4, fans loved to speculate about Carrie Underwood and Anthony Fedorov, but they were just friends. The only long-lasting American Idol romance has been Simon Cowell's love affair with himself.

All this may change if Kimberly Caldwell and David Cook hit it off. Right now it is too early to tell.
