Kindergarten and Preschool Alphabet Lesson Plan for Letter F F

These lesson plans are based on one letter of the alphabet per lesson, and are aimed at children in kindergarten and preschool. In most lessons there is an animal, snack idea, color or shape, body part or movement, music, fun activity or arts and crafts, and common sight words (these are words that the student should eventually memorize, by sight). Lesson Plan for Letter F f: On your lined school paper, write a capital F and three dotted capital E's. Have your student trace these and try to write at least two on their own. Repeat with the lowercase letter. You may need to help your student correctly hold the pencil, or even help them to trace and shape the letters if writing is a new skill.

Handwriting: Provide your student with a page from a large print word search puzzle. Write the letter F, at the top and circle on F on the puzzle. Have the student circle all remaining F's. Make it fun, like a treasure hunt. When they are done, double check their work. Be sure to praise their effort. A fun activity to try next is to connect the dots. Draw a line that connects all of the circled F's. This is a great hand-eye coordination activity.

Animal: FROG is the Fun animal that comes to mind with the letter F. Talk about what sound a frog makes. What does a frog eat? Have you seen a frog before? Get a few books about frogs from the library. Frog and Toad fiction books are always a big hit. Read the books together, look at the pictures and talk about the books.

Sight Words: Off and For are the sight words for letter F. Make flash cards for these new sight words, and review the previously memorized sight words from letters A through E. Play games with the flashcards, such as memory and matching games. Memorization of sight words will aid in reading speed and comprehension.

Snack Idea: Food starts with F. This can be great fun. Make some fun or funny treats. Let everyone talk about their favorite food.

Color or Shape: This lesson can have more than one color. Use the color green for frogs, but let the student know how many different colors frogs can be. Try drawing of coloring pictures of frogs. Coloring is a great developmental tool for hand eye coordination.

Body Part of Movement: This lesson uses the Fingers and Feet. Encourage wiggly fingers, counting fingers, names of the fingers, fingernail, learning right and left hand. Review the difference between Foot and Feet.

Music or Reading: Some lessons have more than one song or reading that work great. This lesson, try reading one of the Frog and Toad books. There are also many fun frog songs too.

Fun activity: What young child doesn't enjoy a game of leap-frog. A word of caution, this game needs adult supervision to keep students from jumping on top of each other. Jump rope is great exercise and a super activity for body coordination. Jumping Jacks are a classic, that always brings laughter. Developing the coordinated movements using arms and legs at the same time is often a very comedic activity.

There are other ways to include this lesson's letter into the school day. Think of other animals that begin with the letter F, like Fish and Fox. There are many short words that start with the letter F, such as Fun, Fan, Full, the numbers Four and Five. Make posters with the letter F and include anything that starts with the letter F. Have FUN, and use positive reinforcement and enjoy!
