Lesson Plan with a Letter in Mind, Teach the ABC's and Alphabet

M M Denny
These lesson plans are based on one letter of the alphabet per lesson, and are aimed at children in Homeschool, kindergarten and preschool. In most lessons there is an animal, snack idea, color or shape, body part or movement, music, fun activity or arts and crafts, and common sight words (these are words that the student should eventually memorize, by sight). Be sure to see the guide for suggestions on using the "Lesson plan with a letter in mind" lesson plans. This guide also has a list of recommended supplies.

Lesson Plan for Letter G g:
On your lined school paper, write a capital G and three dotted capital G's. Have your student trace these and try to write at least two on their own. Repeat with the lowercase letter. You may need to help your student correctly hold the pencil, or even help them to trace and shape the letters if writing is a new skill.

Handwriting
: Provide your student with a page from a large print word search puzzle. Write the letter G, at the top and circle on G on the puzzle. Have the student circle all remaining G's. Make it fun, like a treasure hunt. When they are done, double check their work. Be sure to praise their effort. A fun activity to try next is to connect the dots. Draw a line that connects all of the circled G's. This is a great hand-eye coordination activity.

Animal:
GOAT is the Fun animal that comes to mind with the letter G. Talk about what sound a goat makes. What does a goat eat? If your student has a goat, everything might be the answer. Have you seen a goat before? Get a few books about farm animals from the library. Maybe visit a local farm or petting zoo that has goats. Read the books together, look at the pictures and talk about the books.

Sight Words
: Go is the sight words for letter G. Make flash cards for these new sight words, and review the previously memorized sight words from letters A through F. Play games with the flashcards, such as memory and matching games. Memorization of sight words will aid in reading speed and comprehension.

Snack Idea:
Green beans can be a snack for letter G, however a lot of young children don't like them. Consider making green jello jiggles or anything green for snacks for the letter G.

Color or Shape: Use the color green for letter G. Also, make traffic lights with Red, Yellow and Green. Talk about stopping and going on the right color. Coloring is a great developmental tool for hand eye coordination.

Body Part of Movement:
Red light Green light is a super fun game for kids of all ages and is quickly learned. Using the traffic light the student has colored, run, walk, ride trikes or bikes, going on green and stopping on red.

Music or Reading
: Some lessons have more than one song or reading that work great. This lesson, try the song "Go out and Get your own Goat" by Fran Avni. This is a great song for practicing the G sound.

Fun activity:
Playing Red light Green light will soon become a PE and Recess favorite

There are other ways to include this lesson's letter into the school day. Think of other words that begin with the letter G, such as Girl and Giggle and Gross. Make posters with the letter G and include anything that starts with the letter G. Have FUN, and use positive reinforcement and enjoy!
