If Amazon opened the kindle Source code a little bit to allow, developers to create add ons for the kindle this could be an amazing thing both for users and for Amazon. For users this could create a lot of cool "applications" that could be used on the kindle making them not just for reading.
This would be great not only for kindle users because since they would be able to use their kindle's for so much more but also great for Amazon because they could just jump onto the App Store Bandwagon like all the phone companies are doing and they would of course make a percentage of the Apps Kindle Users buy.
This could not be all that hard for Amazon to actually get rolling because they can easily send out an over the air update to all kindle users making everyone's kindles able to use applications built by developers. Also its quite obvious Amazon knows how to create a store for buying things, they just need to open an app section in both their online store and the Kindle store that is reached on each kindle. This would be an amazing Idea and make the already amazing kindle even more useful.
Imagine the applications that could be created for the kindle...ok well of course they wouldn't be as beautiful and animated as applications on the iphone or any other phone for that matter since the kindle is using eink. But there are still tons of useful applications that could be used on the kindle especially since it has an Internet connection and could easily obtain data.
Just to throw out a few ideas for Kindle applications that could be created are:
- calendar which could sync online with your google calendar since the kindle has Internet access
- contacts list; which could also sync witlessly with google contacts
- sports scores; soccer, baseball, football, basketball etc.
- to-do list; could sync online with remember the milk or now google to
These are just a few great ideas of things I would love to have on my kindle which could be easily integrated if Amazon opened up the kindle source code to be able to write code for applications. Lets not forget that you can access google maps on the kindle, so why can we not have other applications?
