Kindle Consumer Product Review: Must Have or Maybe Later

Summer Banks
eBooks are the latest and greatest technology. With the Kindle eReader, consumers can download books and other documents and read them quickly and easily on the flat Kindle screen. While Kindle has been around for several years and continues to improve with each new edition, there are several flaws that cause consumers to regularly return their Kindles for a replacement or refund. Do consumers consider the Kindle a Must Have or Maybe Later product?

Consumers Love the Kindle for:

Consumers love the Kindle for the screen contrast, lightweight design and improved battery life. As an eReader, the consumer product reviews for Kindle soar with tens of thousands of consumers giving the Kindle a 5-Star review on various consumer product websites.

The new Kindle, the Kindle 3, offers PDF reading functionality, though some consumers complain images cannot be read and difficulty reading documents easily because the image is too small and needs to be zoomed in extremely close before words are legible.

Other positive aspects of the Kindle include portability, font size, low cost and ease of downloading books.

Consumers Dislike the Kindle for:

Just because the Kindle is considered one of the best eReaders available today, does not mean consumers are always happy with the design and functionality. The Kindle does not offer the fasting browsing speed over Wi-Fi, whether home or public. The newest edition, Kindle 3, replaces the joystick feature with a center button and some consumers complain about button functionality and difficulty of use. The most common complaint about the Kindle eReader is freezing.

Consumers who own the Kindle complain frequently about the unit freezing during downloads, while charging or while the user is reading a book. Freezes also commonly occur when moving from one eBook page to the next. Several consumers have returned the Kindle or requested a refund after several units were received with the same problem.

Other common complaints include inefficient battery life, no backlight, inability to connect to Wi-Fi after a few days, rattling in the interior case and uninitiated shut down.

Do Consumers Believe the Kindle is a Must Have or Maybe Later?

There are definitely more positive reviews for the Kindle than negative reviews, but the large number of consumers complaining about units freezing and rattling are concerning. If a consumer is looking to use the Kindle for MP3 playing and surfing the Internet, they may be disappointed with the functionality of the Kindle. If the eReader function is all the consumer is looking to take advantage of the Kindle may be perfect.

Kindle keeps pushing the limits of eReader technology and pushing down the price of the Kindle. For that reason, I will give the Kindle a *Must Have* rating. Though it is important to note, Kindle needs to work on fixing the freezing and clunky Internet navigation.

  • The Kindle tends to freeze quite often, according to consumer product reviews.
  • Contrast is better on the latest Kindle edition, the Kindle 3.
  • Battery life is improved, but tends to vary widely.
Kindle is available in 3G and Wi-Fi versions. The 3G model requires a monthly subscription to access the Internet via 3G.
