Kindle DX 3rd Generation an E-Reader Review

The Kindle DX 3rd Generation is the Latest E-reader Offering from Amazon

Mike Burnside
I have had the opportunity to review several different e-readers including the different versions that Amazon has released with their Kindle e-reader. In this version, Amazon has created not only a great, dedicated e-reader in the Kindle; they have addressed many of the mistakes that they made in previous versions. Let us look at the new Kindle DX 3rd generation as see why it is a much better e-reader than many of its competitors.

Readability of the Kindle DX 3rd Generation

The Kindle DX 3rd Generation seems to have a much better readability than previous versions. Kindle DX 3rd Generation comes in two versions, one is the Wi-Fi version and the other is the Wi-Fi and 3G version. You can also get the Kindle DX 3rd Generation in two colors, graphite, and standard white. When choosing, the graphite gives the Kindle DX 3rd Generation a darker boarder and enhances the readability of the device. There is better screen contrast also because the Kindle DX 3rd Generation has an updated display. This new Kindle uses the 6-inch E-Ink Pearl screen that pops the blacks and makes the text smoother. You will find the screen refresh is faster on the Kindle DX 3rd Generation as well.

A Small, Better Kindle DX 3rd Generation

Amazon figured out that they did not need all the extra boarders that were a part of previous versions The Kindle DX 3rd Generation is 21 percent less in size than those previous models and the 6-inch screen seems to dominate the machine. Having the Kindle DX 3rd Generation smaller just made for a more comfortable time using it. The Kindle DX 3rd Generation is 7.5 inches by 4.8 by 0.34 inches and weighs only 8.7-ounces, about a third of the weight of the Apple iPad.

Amazon reworked the buttons and made them more user friendly on the Kindle DX 3rd Generation. On either side of the 6-inch screen are simple forward or back buttons that accommodate either left of right handed users. There is a menu button to help navigate which is much better than the previous joystick in previous Kindle versions. The keyboard is tight and with rounded buttons to make typing much easier.

Page Loading on the Kindle DX 3rd Generation

According to the Amazon website, the Kindle DX 3rd Generation is about 20 percent faster loading pages and menus. You will still see some flickering when the page is turned, but the added speed reduces that flicker. Spending time using the Kindle DX 3rd Generation I noticed only sparse lagging when online viewing book selection at Amazon.com. That lag could have been anything from a slow 3G connection to high website traffic.

Great New Features on the Kindle DX 3rd Generation

The fun part of any new gadget is the new features added to it. The Kindle DX 3rd Generation has a few. In this Kindle version, you can change the typeface to three options, regular, condensed, or sans serif. Not huge leaps as other e-readers have had the font change option for some time. The internal memory on this version is bumped up to 4GB, which would translate to 3500 books. The battery life on the Kindle DX 3rd Generation is rated at one month. AT&T provides the 3G network access free so far.

Overall Impression of the Kindle DX 3rd Generation

This is a vastly improved version of the Kindle. The Kindle DX 3rd Generation is a fun to use dedicated e-reader that seems to have all the bells and whistles one is looking for. The long battery life, great screen contrast that can be read in even bright light, and the easy to handle, lightweight, and smaller size make the Kindle DX 3rd Generation worth the investment.
