King Charles Cavalier - Great Addition to Your Family

When my husband and I were married 5 and a half years ago we knew we wanted to start a family right away. What we didn't expect was to run into almost 2 years of problems trying to conceive. It was a very difficult time for us. After our second failed attempt at Artificial Insemination we were devastated. I went to visit a friend of mine and she had this great dog. This was the friendliest dog I had ever met. She made me forget how upset I was that day. My friend told me the breed was a King Charles Cavalier. I took the name and number of the breeder, said goodbye to her dog, and went home.

Never in a million years did I think my husband would agree to getting this dog. It was going to cost us $1500 for this particular breed. We did not have that kind of money laying around. So I just forgot about it. Well to my surprise my husband sat me down one night after dinner and said he thought it was a great idea for us to get the dog. He knew how happy it was going to make me. He said he would find the money and not to worry about it. So I called the breeder that day. I didn't want to wait another second. These doges are very rare because they have to come from Ireland. There is something with the breed that if they don't come straight from Ireland then they can have something wrong with their hearts.

When I called the breeder she said that she only had 3 left and 1 was already adopted. I really wanted a girl because I already had a boy cat and a boy golden lab retriever mix. She only had one boy and one girl left. I told her we would come the next night to choose but I really wanted the girl. When we picked her up I knew she was the one. This type of breed comes in different colors. The one I wanted was called Blenheim. The other ones were Ruby and Black and Tan. So it was a no decision for me. She was coming home with us that night. Boy was she tiny though. We named her Laney after Elaine from Seinfeld since our other dog was Cozmo after Cozmo Kramer from Seinfeld too. My husband is a Seinfeld fanatic.

Her personality is great. They are known to bred as lapdogs. Kings and Queens used to own these dogs and they would just sit on their laps. They are not bred for working. She is so loving no matter what. You come home from a hard day at work and she is right there to greet you. She grew from this tiny little puppy into a 22 pound pretty princess. ( That is what we call her ). We have a 115 pound retriever and he lets her sit on him. It is hysterical. She is so good natured. She really filled the void that I had in my heart. You do have to make sure that she is groomed regularly though. Her hair can get out of control and her nails need frequent cutting. She also has a tendency to overeat. She loves her snacks. She would weigh 50 pounds if we didn't watch her diet. Another thing is that she loves to lay on the couches. We don't let her but for some reason I notice her hair on the cushions.

If you are looking for one of the best dogs to add to you family, especially if you have kids, this is the perfect one. I am happy to report that after years of trying we have a beautiful 2 year old son who adores the dog. He loves to run and play with her and she loves him so much too.
