King of the Grill

Dessert Ideas for Father's Day

Jennifer Martino Trosclair
One of the first things that come to mind when one mentions Father's Day is barbecuing on the grill. Steaks, ribs, hotdogs, burgers - it is so easy to grill up something that will please pops. But, what about desserts? Aside from the occasional tie-shaped cake or a simple chocolate cake, it can be tough to cook up a creative treat for dad. Well, here's a tasty way to honor the King of the Grill on Father's Day with these BBQ grill cupcakes found in Family Fun Magazine:

Ingredients:

1. Brownie Mix

2. Cupcake Liners

3. Black Food Coloring

4. White Icing

5. Hot Tamale candies

6. Caramels with cream centers

7. Orange Sugar

8. Green, red, and yellow jelly candies

9. Toothpicks

After creating your favorite brownie mix, oil 12 cupcake liners. Fill them two thirds full and bake according to recipe directions. While the brownies are cooling, mix one or two drops of black food coloring with ΒΌ cup icing in a small mixing bowl. After transferring the frosting to a Ziploc bag, snip a small section off the corner. Use this gray mixture to pipe lines onto each brownie, representing the grills of a BBQ pit. After this has set for 20 minutes, add sprinkles of orange sugar to create the embers in the pit. Lastly, prepare the grill "food" as follows and place atop each brownie:

Shish kebabs - a portion of caramel cream (to represent meat), yellow, green, and red candy slices (to represent veggies); affix all to a toothpick to make a skewer

Steaks - mold each caramel cream to resemble a steak; use a toothpick dipped in black food coloring to create grill marks on each steak

Hot dogs - use a toothpick dipped in black food coloring to create grill marks on each hot dog

These BBQ pit grill brownies are almost to adorable and believable to eat. They make the perfect ending to a day of grilling for dad.
