King costumes are a popular choice for Halloween. King costumes also work well for both men and kids. You can be romantic and elegant by dressing up as the King of Hearts. You can be the life of the party in a funny Burger King costume. And you can be scary and awesome as the witch king from the Lord of the Rings. Here are some essential tips on how to make each one of these cool Halloween king costumes.

King of Hearts Halloween Costume for Adults

To get started on your King of Hearts Halloween costume, find a red velour bathrobe with long sleeves in your closet or at your local thrift store. Buy enough white faux fur fabric to trim all the hems of the bathrobe. Set aside the belt and remove the belt loops with a seam ripper. Make black spots on the faux fur with a permanent marker to imitate ermine trim. Hot glue the fur trim to the hem of the bathrobe. Get a black shirt, pair of pants and shoes to go with your king of hearts costume. Also find a red or white satin vest and cummerbund and a white satin costume sash. Cut out red hearts from felt and sew or hot glue them to the sash.

Print out and cut out one of these crown templates to make your crown. Get some gold poster board to make your crown. If you prefer, you could also use white poster board and spray paint it gold. Place the crown template over the unfinished side. Trace lightly around it with pencil. Place the poster board over corrugated cardboard and cut out the crown with a craft blade. Find some red-heart shaped plastic jewels at your local craft store and use the template as a guide to glue them on the crown.

Burger King Halloween Costume for Adults

To make a Burger King costume for Halloween, find a brown velour bathrobe with a shawl collar, preferably with a zip closure. If you can't find a bathrobe with a zipper, you could get a belted brown bathrobe and sew the bottom half of the robe together at the front. Add some white faux fur trim to the collar of the robe with hot glue. Get some tall white socks, stockings or tights and black shoes. Wear a brown or gold shirt with a fancy pattern such as paisley, fleurs-de-lis or crests. If you like, add a white ruffle collar to the neckline of the shirt. Make your Halloween costume complete with a vinyl Burger King mask, a paper Burger King crown and a large gold-toned medallion necklace.

Lord of the Rings Witch-King Halloween Costume for Adults

The witch-king of Angmar is a ringwraith from The Lord of the Rings. Also called the Nazgul king, the witch-king of Angmar wears full armor with a spiked helmet and mask and a tattered dark cloak on top. It's not necessary to reproduce the entire suit of witch-king armor to make a witch-king costume, since most of the armor is hidden by the cloak. However, the spiked helmet, mask and gauntlets are essential to make this Halloween costume complete.

You can make a cheap and easy witch-king Halloween costume mask out of metal using this Nazgul mask tutorial on the Instructables website. The mask won't look exactly like the one in the movie, but it may serve your purpose if time and money are more important then authenticity. If you would like a more authentic looking witch king mask, try improvising with or adding to this mask project using paper mache, fiberglass resin or modeling clay. For an easier project, you could make witch-king mask from materials such as cardboard and bondo. Use acrylic craft paint to achieve the right color and texture on the helmet and mask.

You can make the witch-king costume gauntlets from aluminum sheet metal, leather gloves and rivets. Use a high resolution picture of the gauntlets as a guide when cutting the aluminum pieces. The safest and most accurate way to cut aluminum sheeting is by using tin snips. Antique the metal by beating, sanding or otherwise distressing it. Dilute black acrylic paint with matte medium, then rub it into the surface of the gauntlets.

Make the witch-king's flowing robes out of old thrift store clothing. Rip the seams out the hems of old night-gowns, shirts, dresses and skirts. Cut slits in the ends of the clothes and fray them. Add several layers of clothing until your witch king costume has the right look. If necessary, you can dye them using black, brown or gray Rit dye. Add a prop sword to make your witch-king Halloween costume complete.
