King Lear

GMJ
AGING KING LEAR OF BRITAIN decides to step down from the throne;
He hath had his fill;

He shall divide his kingdom among his daughters
Cordelia, Regan and Goneril.

He asks his daughters how much they love him;
He puts them to the test;
Two giveth him flattering answers,
Not Cordelia whom he loves best.

Lear flies into a rage!
Disowns Cordelia, without a second chance!
The French king who loves her dearly
Steals her away to France.

His eldest daughters betray Lear
And cause him so much pain;
He flees his daughters' houses,
Then wanders in the rain
On the road to madness,
Drizzle driving him insane.

Meanwhile, a nobleman named Gloucester hath problems of his own;
Tricked by his son Edmund, his son Edgar to disown.
Edmund fans the flames;
"Edgar is trying to kill you," he claims.

A manhunt is set by Gloucester;
'Tis Edgar they pursue;
Flee to the heath, into the rain
Is what Edgar must do.

Gloucester realizes that Lear's daughters have betrayed Lear for no good reason;
Regan and her husband Cornwall capture and blind him for committing treason.;
Though he had much to lose and fear,
Gloucester tried to help King Lear.

Turned out to wander the countryside,
He meets with Lear in Dover;
Across the English Channel,
The French Army Crosseth over.

Led by Cordelia
In an effort to save her father;
By him she was disowned;
'Tis a wonder she would bother.

Edgar challengeth Edmund to a duel;
The gauntlet he doth throw down;
English troops meet the gallant French
For the final showdown.

What happens next I dare not say;
Thou must read or watch this play.
