These days it's hard to find another Square Enix series that attracts more attention than Kingdom Hearts. Though described as a crossover between Final Fantasy and Disney, the series has been decidedly angled in the Disney corner since the original. Square Enix have undertaken every effort they can to not upset the 600 pound mouse in the room when it comes to the IP. Now word is that the third entry in the Kingdom Hearts series will be announced at E3 this year. Will Nomura bring a smile to countless faces with such an announcement?
What do we know so far about Kingdom Hearts 3? Surprisingly little. The main things we're aware of? Kingdom Hearts 3 will be a more cinematic experience than its predecessors. While this could be a blessing, most are looking at it as a curse. Anyone of the many gamers disappointed by the self-indulgent, convoluted story-telling methods of Final Fantasy XIII will attest to that. Then again, it is possible that this could be done better with KH 3.
The game's platform is a mystery. The most likely candidate at this point is the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo and Disney have a fantastic relationship thanks to several successful collaborations over the last few years- from DS applications, exclusives like Epic Mickey, and other loyal support. You need only look to the success of the 'Kingdom Hearts' inspired gameplay in Spectrobes on the Wii and DS. Considering the immense install base of the Wii as well as the welcoming nature of said owners, SE is even more likely to opt for a Wii exclusive over its judgmental, shooter loving HD rivals. You could also factor in the massive fan request for the sequel to be Wii exclusive. Then there's the limitless possibilities of a Wii Motion Plus centered Kingdom Hearts 3 that's got fans dying for such an announcement.
The second most likely console would have to be the Playstation 3. While it can't compare at all to the awe-inspiring sales of the Wii, the PS3 does have the brand association with the KH franchise. However speculation on the matter is that if KH3 does go to the PS3, it will not be exclusive and will instead be placed on both it and the Xbox 360, ala FF13. Considering how SE has been treating the PS3 like some untouchable throughout this generation with a scarcity of exclusives, it would be a nice form of redemption for SE to announce it as PS3 exclusive at E3.
The least likely platform for Kingdom Hearts 3? Easily the 360. It's by no means a secret that the only genre that Xbox 360 owners are truly loyal to, is the shooter. Every year, including this one thus far, the top selling games on the console are FPSs. The 360 is wedged in an unfortunate position when it comes to a possible KH title. It lacks the Wii's near 80 million consoles sold and the Playstation 3's KH name association. Should it be announced for the 360 at E3 this year, don't expect it to be exclusive- it'll be sitting on the PS3 or Wii as well.
The last detail on Kingdom Hearts 3? It will likely not star (or feature for that matter) Sora. Like Final Fantasy before it, Nomura would like to take the series in a direction of totally original casts with each entry. Keep your ears to the ground and your eyes open, because you just might see Kingdom Hearts 3. Strange creature, traitor to the world- this has been Kaiju.
