The Jews considered YHWH, the unpronounceable name of God, to be so holy that it was forbidden to be used; which is why in the Old Testament God was referred to as Lord, rather than by name.
Matthew was a Jew and he was writing to his fellow Jews who respected the name of God and avoided using it as much as possible. Therefore, rather than write, "the kingdom of God," he chose to write "the kingdom of heaven" to avoid using the holy name of God.
Furthermore, in Matthew 19:16-24, Jesus said to his disciples, 'I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." But in the next verse he said, "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Jesus himself used the two phrases interchangeably.
Nevertheless, there are a number of those who believe they are somehow different and there are scriptures which do seem to suggest two different kingdoms. Jesus said the kingdom of God is within us and is not something we can physically see. "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:20)
However, at the end of the age, Christ is coming to set up his everlasting kingdom on earth which will be a physical kingdom. The angel told Mary, "He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." (Luke 1:32)
Apparently, the kingdom within is spiritual while the kingdom on earth will be physical and the two will be one when all is said and done. Perfect unity is a recurring theme throughout the Bible. Jesus and the Father are one. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one. The church and Christ are one. Therefore, the spiritual kingdom of heaven and the physical kingdom of God are actually one and the same.
