Kinnikinnick makes a range of gluten free baked goods including sandwich breads, donuts and muffins. All are made in a gluten free and wheat free facility and many of their products are also dairy free and soy free. Unlike many gluten free baked goods, Kinnikinnick products don't have any obvious texture problems - they look, taste and feel the way baked goods should and do not suffer from the excessive oiliness that can be common in gluten free cakes and cookies.
Kinnkinnick's success with gluten free baking probably comes from the fact that in terms of gluten free priducts, they've been around forever. The company was founded in 1991 and those with celiac disease and other gluten intolerances have been searching out their gluten free goods at health food stores or even mail ordering them ever since.
Kinnikinnick seems to be benefiting fro the recent media attention celiac disease and other gluten related conditions have been receiving. Additionally, gluten free diets are something that are increasingly tried with kids who display austism symptoms. Whatever the case may be, the plastic sacks of sticky gluten free donuts from Kinnikinnick have recently been replaced by sturdy boxes, each containing six dipped gluten free donuts in chocolate, vanilla or maple (I'm hoping for a mixed box soon). Long-time customers of Kinnikinnick's gluten free products will note that the donuts have gotten slightly smaller, but it's a trade I'm willing to endure for packaging that keeps the gluten free donuts in better condition and makes them more appealing as stock for more stores.
Like most gluten free products Kinnkinnick donuts have to be stored in the freezer and the company recommends that you heat them before eating. While warming gluten free products often helped them achieve a more typical texture, I haven't found that to be necessary with the Kinnikinnick gluten free donuts, which effectively mimic regular cake style donuts. If you do decide to heat the gluten free Kinnikinnick donuts be sure to do it on a low temperature - the icing burns easily and has set off my smoke detector more than once.
If you are looking for a great gluten free snack, treat or breakfast item, you should put Kinnikinnick gluten free products on the top of your list. Each box of six gluten free donuts costs between $5 and $7.
