Kirkland's - A Decorator's Dream

Jessica Ann
I absolutely love this store and have purchased several items from there for my home. The first thing I love about this store is the style of the items and the price. One year I had one of those Christmas villages and looked at them everywhere I could find them. Unfortunately they were just too expensive to bother with until I found the one at Kirkland's. I was able to purchase an entire village, plus an additional church with lights, lots of little figurines, a sleigh, a carousel and much much more for $40. That was one of the best deals I ever found and there are always many to be had at this store. The decor changes for the holiday seasons, so you will find different items available during specific times of the year as well as the regular collection of knick-knacks. Throughout the store you will find mirrors, clocks, pillows, tapestry, pictures, frames, chairs and so much more.

I had decided to redecorate my living room a couple years ago and happened to find a lot of my items at Kirkland's which you can find in many malls in almost every state. I had purchased the perfect chocolate brown curtains for my living room and since I already had cream color sofas, decided to stay with a warm brown and wood appeal. I hung a few pictures that I found at Kirkland's which were various palm trees framed in a rich dark oak beveled frame, but still had some wall room leftover. This was actually not just a little wall, but a large area to fill. Since I really enjoy having candles burning I thought I could find something to fill in the spots so back to Kirkland's I went. I found this nice dark wood shadow type box which holds six candles across and attaches to the wall. The votives sit within a cut-out opening to see the candles. It is absolutely beautiful when it's glowing. After seeing a wall in a bar that had real flames in a zig-zag pattern up the wall, I figured I could do something similar. I was able to snag small 4" long shelves with multi-beveled bottoms that hung on the wall and added these great clear textured glass candle holders on each little shelf. When these are lit with candles is throws a beautiful glow all the way up my wall since they are laid out like two stair cases.

Another item we had wanted and searched for in every store imaginable was one of those glass misting fountains. Of course it turned out that Kirkland's had, once again, exactly what I wanted and cheaper than anywhere else. Actually, it was the last one they had that day so we even got a discount even though they had just put it out for display.

If you're looking for some artwork then this also may be just what you need. They carry very large pieces down to very small pictures and they are all in some of the prettiest frames I've ever seen. The prices are reasonable when compared to say one of those frame shops in the mall. The frames are usually quite intricate in detail so you may not find something too plain if that's what you want. Aside from the fancy clocks they also carry just pieces of wrought iron works. Some may just be decorative and others are for holding candles. I found this interesting candle holder there a while back which was a large round wood frame with black iron scrolls throughout the middle and a dark red glass candle holder set at north, south, east and west. This has actually moved through several rooms in my house as it works everywhere.

You may also luck out here and find that great small piece of furniture you've been seeking and haven't found yet. I have seen some elaborate to very simple pieces carried in this store over the years.

There are also some very beautiful throws here to toss over the back of your sofas, chair or even a piece of furniture. I like to have a throw hanging over one corner of a dresser then weight it down with a heavy knick-knack and Kirkland's has lots of those. Want to round out a room with a few plants, then you can also get those here for a reasonable cost, if like me, you kill any living plants. I really could go on and on about all the stuff they have at Kirkland's, but the items change out quite often and there's always new stuff to see so you must make a visit to see the bargains on beautiful things for your home.

Additionally, if you happen to be a design professional, then you can join the Designer Advantage program and get ten percent discounts on all items you are purchasing for your client. This also gets you an advantage because you will get previews of items to come so you can get what you're going to need before they all disappear from the store. That's the one thing I've noticed about Kirkland's, if you see something today then you should probably get it because tomorrow it will be gone. Unfortunately I learned that the hard way when I returned to get a second of a couple pieces I bought only to find they were sold out and not getting anymore in.

I too have aways loved Kirklands, the absolutely necessary place to go before leaving any mall. Unfortunately the two closest malls to me, both about 23 miles from my home near Tampa, Fl, have left the malls for free standing locations. Hate it, hate it, hate it. It means finding a parking place to go into the mall and then hiking to the car and driving to where ever they decided to put the Kirklands, looking for another parking space and again hiking into the store. As much as I love their decorative items, and I bought many for myself and as gifts, I don't do it. They have unfortunately lost me as a customer. Maybe in other parts of the country they are still inside the male.
