The Susan G Komen foundation was founded by her Susan's sister, Nancy Brinker as a death-bed promise to Susan not to stop until a cure for breast cancer was found. Since 1982, with that promise in mind, Brinker has set out to put resources in the hands of those who might find a cure for breast cancer, to raise the level of awareness of this affliction, and to give the power of hope to the women who anxiously await the cure for breast cancer. To that end, Komen for the cure has raised 1 billion dollars worldwide and promises to raise another 2 billion in the next 10 years.
Breast Cancer is the second largest cause of cancer related death in women in America, only surpassed by lung cancer. In a lifetime, women have a 1 in 8 chance of developing this disease. The often-overlooked male demographic has a 1 in 28 chance and has less probability of detection. In practical numbers that means that each year over 200,000 women will be diagnosed and 1700 men .The ray of hope here, is that not all cases are fatal. In fact, of the 200,000 developments the fatality number drops to 40,000 and in men the rate falls to 450.
The most appalling statistic is the rate of detection.
- Government statistics show that the rate of survival if the cancer is discovered in the early localized (before it spreads) stages is 98.1%.
This early stage, currently, is where only 61% of cases are found. -
- In the 31% of cases that are found in the next stage when the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes the survival rates drop to below 84%,
-
- If the cancer is allowed to spread into what is called the distant stage, then rate of survival drops into the below 30% range.
