Kitchen Decor Paint Color Scheme with Behr Paint's Soothing Celadon Green

Serenity Now

Pam Gaulin
As soon as I saw Soothing Celadon by Behr Paint I knew that I had to have it in my new kitchen. The color complements the serenity of our house, which has views of tall trees from every window. The kitchen was the first room that I wanted to paint, with that enticing Behr Paint color. For practical reasons, it the was the last room I painted. Although Soothing Celadon does play a large part in my kitchen decor, the color palette ideas underwent their own evolution from their original time of conception.

Kitchen Decor Paint Color Scheme With Soothing Celadon Green

With Behr Paint's Soothing Celadon as my main kitchen paint color, I knew that I had to have darker colors in my color palette as well. The need for a darker complementary paint color was further emphasized by the fact that I also wanted a lot of white on the kitchen cabinet frames. The white we chose was the Premium Plus Interior Kitchen & Bath Sateen Lustre Enamel Ultra Pure White. This color comes right off the shelf, no added tints are needed.

The initial palette started with Behr Paint's Soothing Celadon, in their Kitchen and Bath paint. The Behr Kitchen and Bath paint is more expensive than their regular wall paint. On sale, one gallon of the kitchen and bath paint at Home Depot was about $28.

Ultra Pure White

The Premium Plus Interior Kitchen & Bath Sateen Lustre Enamel Ultra Pure White is a bright, cool white. Had we tinted this white, the Soothing Celadon would not pop as well as it does, because it is a light paint color.

I used the Behr Paint Ultra Pure White on the door frames, the window frames, and the kitchen cabinet framing. The kitchen cabinet doors were not painted white.

Soothing Celadon

I applied Behr Paint's Soothing Celadon to the cabinet doors and the kitchen drawer fronts. I painted both sides of the kitchen cabinet doors in this same Celadon green color. Because I had actually bought a full gallon of Behr Paint's Soothing Celadon, I also painted the interior of the cabinets with the same color.

In hindsight, I may have left the interior of the cabinets white, although it would have been a bit glaring. I could have easily painted the 12 full kitchen cabinet doors and two half doors on both sides, as well as the three large drawers, with much less paint than I bought.

Soothing Celadon is made with Yellow Oxide, Thalo Green and Raw Umber.

Copper Pot

The other color that I knew I wanted in the kitchen was Behr Paint's Copper Pot. Copper Pot is like the color of a penny but without the shine or gloss. From a basic color matching process, if you consider that red and green are complementary colors, the combination of Celadon Green and Copper Pot makes sense.

I knew that the Copper Pot would offer a warm contrast to my cool Celadon Green. I also knew that I would have to use the Copper Pot sparingly, since it is such a bold color. The Behr Copper Pot was applied to the center beam separating the eating area from the main kitchen. It is also used on the doors of the kitchen island, and on select trim areas of the kitchen cabinets.

To complete the Copper Pot look, I found similarly colored towels and a table runner.

Smokey Slate

The day I was painting the kitchen, I added one more color to my kitchen decor palette. I had considered a misty blue, but I went with a darker green instead. The Smokey Slate green was a last-minute choice which works perfectly with the Celadon Green, the Copper Pot and the Ultra White.

Behr Paint's Smokey Slate green is a pastel paint made with Lamp Black, Yellow Oxide, Thalo Green and Raw Umber. From the tints, you can see that it is related to the Celadon Green.

The Smoke Slate green was used on the walls in the main kitchen area and in the kitchen dining area. Had I gone with Soothing Celadon on the walls in the main kitchen, the entire palette may have been too light.
