Kitchen Items Double for Metal Clay Work

Janet Trieschman
Great resources for metal clay work can be found in the kitchen isle of your big box store, as well as the cake decorating supply store. Many of these items can be found online too. Keep in mind; some may be more expensive while others will be less. You will need to price compare. Check the materials used to make these tools. I understand you should not use aluminum items with metal clay. Here is a list of items I saw when I was looking around for Teflon baking sheets.

Please note that with any cross use item, once it is used for craft making, it needs to be dedicated to that use. Do not use the following items with your metal clay and then return them to kitchen use.

Chopsticks

Chopsticks come in both round and square rods. These could be used for the center of beads or bails. If you purchase wooden sticks, they will burn out during firing because they are a natural material.

Cookie cutters

Small cookie cutters make great shapes for pins and earrings.

Fondant molds

Great for pushing clay into; although I suggest watching the thickness of the mold. Using that much metal clay can get expensive.

Fondant Roller

This roller appears to me to be exactly a roller with thickness rings on it. The one I saw had two different thickness rings.

Garlic press

Pressing the clay through the press would make nice spaghetti shaped pieces for hair or abstract shapes. Very similar to an extruder but it creates multiple strands all at once.

Herb mincer

This item looks like a small pizza slicer with multiple cutters. This would make great strips of metal clay. You could use the strips for weaving a pattern or for making rings or bails.

Punch sets

Punches are the same punches used for metal clay, some of the exact same shapes can be found for cutting fondant.

Rope Molds and Border Molds

These molds appear to be very similar to ring and bracelet molds.

Spatula

Available in a variety of sizes and sets, but a bit less expensive than those from the arts and crafts supply stores.

Teflon Sheet

You can of course buy small pieces of this from the metal clay jewelry suppliers. If you can locate it in a baking supply store, you will find a much larger sheet for a lot less money.

Texture Sheets and Impression Mats

Sheets and mats are great for making surface patterns. Some are rubber mats while others are plastic.
