Huge kites are commonly used in Kite surfing to influence the wind. A surfer can power the kite along the water surface when he is kite surfing. Wind is the main source to give power to the kites and kite surfing is a sport which does not require waves or tides as the name suggest, and many surfers favor a flat surface of water. There are different aspects of kite surfing that surfers enjoy. You can enjoy chilling out in the waters while learning the sport, practicing a new trick for a competition ahead or just enjoying the strong winds. You can also enjoy doing big jumps or simply riding along with the waves, while learning the sport of kite surfing.
Kite surfing originated decades ago when some power kite flyers experimented with fun and thrill in the water by using their power kites along with the wind surfing boards. At that time, there were no special boards to fly these kites and so early pioneers had to make do with wakeboards or surfboards. However, times have changed. Kite surfing has grown in a large way and special board and kites are being manufactured to enjoy kite surfing.
Kite surfing has also seen a great evolution and the kites used to now come in inflatable sections so that their shape is maintained, and they can float in water. Since they do not posses a rigid structure, it's very easy to get them packed in a rucksack. Even the largest of largest kite, can fit easily in a rucksack.
For kite surfing, a completely different variety of kites is used from the ones used in land flying as they are built with inflatable tubes, which help in providing shape for the aerofoil. The shape of the kits is very similar to that of the wing of an aero plane. A bar is used to steer the kite in the sky; the bar can also adjust the power required. The kite and the bar are attached by 5 or 4 strong lines, which are done from dyneema and frequently a 500kg breaking strain is preferred as used on the wires.
While kite surfing, two flying lines are fastened to the bar ends and the other lines pass through the bar and are connected to the harness that the driver (surfer) wears. If the bar is moved along these lines, the kite attack angle changes and this leads to an alteration in the kite's power. If kite attack angle increases, the kite's outer surface is exposed to the wind, which raises the kite's power and likewise, when the kite attack angle decreases the kites power decreases. If the bar is pulled towards the body, the power of the kite increases and when the bar is pushed away the kite's power reduces. This technique is one of the major evolutions of kite surfing sport as previously there was no room for adjustments in the kite speed.
From the year 2006, kite designs in kite surfing have seen a drastic change. The major advantage that was seen was that it became safe too because the bar can be pushed and the power can be reduced and increased according to your need. If you let go to the bar totally, the kite would fall, and you will have zero power. You can then relaunch it whenever you want. Since it is easy to use, now the sport has become really accessible and enjoyable in recent years. The shape and size of the board have seen a drastic change as kite surfing has become a user friendly sport which is enjoyable.
Organizations for kite surfing have grown worldwide and many countries now have their own governing bodies, which assist with clubs, provide training and organize competitions and also have their own kite surfing school networks.
