Kit-Kit and Mickey

The Adventures of a Young Kitty

Nancy Kendall
Kit-Kit had not always been a Protector Kitty. When Kit-Kit first came to live with his person, he was very little... and afraid of a lot of things. Kit-Kit had never been away from the big brown box were he use to live. There were a lot of scary things in his new world. Things Kit-Kit had not seen before. One of those things was Mickey.

Mickey floated on a long, white string that didn't quite reach the floor. Mickey had big black eyes and even bigger round black ears. Kit-Kit would never admit it, even when he was crouched with his stomach as close to the floor as he could get it and creeping toward a hiding place, but Mickey was scary... very scary. Every time the air moved, Mickey's big silvery head would bounce up and down on the string.

Kit-Kit's person said Mickey had come from a fun place in California. Kit-Kit wondered what could be so much fun in a place that would have scary things like Mickey. Humans were strange. Kit-Kit's person had brought Mickey home for Kit-Kit to play with. Kit-Kit thought he'd rather play with something that might not eat him... maybe something that Kit-Kit could eat when he was finished playing.

Kit-Kit's person was a nice human. She gave him good things to eat and rubbed his soft, furry, orange ears. She even knew just where he liked to be rub on the side of his jaw and she never pulled his tail. The only problem was she did not know just how dangerous Mickey might be. From Kit-Kit's point of view, crouched behind the sofa, anything that floated around the top of the room watching them all the time could be dangerous. It was apparent to Kit-Kit that his person needed protection, but Kit-Kit was very small to be a Protector Kitty. Kit-Kit needed to grow bigger.

When Kit-Kit's person saw how Mickey frightened Kit-Kit, she put Mickey in a closet. Kit-Kit thought that was better, but he knew Mickey was still there, hiding in the dark closet, just waiting to escape.

It was hard for Kit-Kit to sleep, even when he was snuggled close to his person. Kit-Kit knew Mickey was still hiding nearby in the closet, only a few kitty steps away... hiding in the dark... waiting. Maybe Mickey had already escaped the closet and was even now bouncing his way across the ceiling to where his person was sleeping.

Of course, Kit-Kit was not sleeping. Someone had to stay awake and watch for Mickey's escape. Obviously his person was not doing that. She was sleeping soundly. Hummm... Maybe his person was right and Mickey wasn't dangerous.

Kit-Kit was very tired. Maybe he could take a little kitty nap... but while he napped Kit-Kit would keep his ears open for any scary sounds. Kitties could do that. Kit-Kit was glad he had good ears and was snuggled close to his person.
