Kitty and the Silver Bullet Book Review

Kitty and the Silver Bullet is the fourth book in the Kitty series by Carrie Vaughn. The first two books in this series are very, very dull. The third one is pretty good and Kitty and the Silver Bullet is the best one, yet. I actually found myself interested in this volume's plot and characters and didn't find myself bogged down in the book unlike the first two Kitty books.

These books are set in modern times where the sidhe, vampires, werewolves and other things that go bump in the night are real. Until now, the general public has been unaware of them. But thanks in part to Kitty's radio show and to the research of the paranormal division of the CDC, the fact of the existence of the supernatural has come into the daylight of public opinion.

Kitty now has a pack of two, herself and her lawyer (who has recently been turned into a werewolf), Ben. They are living together close to where their mutual friend Cormac is incarcerated for killing a shape shifter in the previous novel. Rick, a vampire from Denver, (where Kitty's family lives and she lived until she was exiled) visits Kitty and tells her that the Master Vampire of Denver is losing control and he is going to take over, only he needs her help. He needs her to challenge the current werewolf alphas, Carl and Meg, because otherwise they will support the current Vampire Master and Rick can't fight the vampires and the werewolves. Kitty says no way, can't go back to Denver, but then her family calls. Her mother is sick with cancer and needs her to come home. So Kitty goes to Denver. She realizes that she has missed her old home and wants to come back permanently, but she has a problem. The current Master of the Vampires and Alphas of the Werewolves won't let her stay; they want to kill her. Plus there is a new vampire in town that is stirring up trouble. Can Kitty find a way to untangle her and Ben out of this mess? Or will she end up as the new Alpha or dead? Or will the cost of winning be too high to bear? You will have to read to find out.

For the first time, the plot in these novels moved well. There is plenty of action to keep the plot rolling and there are a lot of complications that Kitty has to deal with. These bends in the plot highlight Kitty's growing and developing character nicely, and begin to show us who Ben is as well. He is a relatively new character and we haven't gotten to know him that well, yet. We also get more exposure to Kitty's family and hopefully in subsequent novels there will be more. There could be some characters worth knowing in her family.

Vaughn has finally gotten the hang of novel writing and her style finally fits the novel and it clicks. The novel is interesting and reads well. I finished this one in one night rather than the days it took me to trudge through the others.

This book is the best one in the series so far, too bad you have to read the other three in order for the plot to make sense. I would recommend these novels only if you are completely out of books to read--it is torture trying to make it through the first two.
