The Kiwanis Club of Vinton County hosted a "Kidfest" for local children and their parents August 10, at Wyman Park. The day of activities served two unique purposes, to offer free and low cost positive activities, as well as free school supplies for families in need.

Community groups and local businesses came together to provide school supplies, and activities, over 300 bags of school supplies were put together for the event. The Kiwanis Club plans to work even harder next year to gather and distribute school supplies for area children.

"We wanted to help Vinton County children get a head start on the school year, and the supplies they needed to enjoy the first day of school, and lessen the burden of parents who have been hardest hit by the economy," club president, Bobby Dodrill stated during the event.

Children who attended the event enjoyed dancing to the music provided by the "Dance King" Mike Ziegler, who donated his services for the duration of the event. Members of the Rough Magic Troupe dressed as trolls and fairies, and danced and interacted with youngsters at the event. The Vinton County Bank donated dozens of hot dogs to be given away to families during the Kiwanis Kidfest, Sheriff Dave Hickey, McArthur Police Chief Tony Wood, and Police Captain Mark Schweikert organized a safety station, sharing informational packets and law enforcement themed activity books with children, the McArthur Fire Department offered children the chance to operate a fire hose, and get behind the driver's seat of an engine, Moonville Rail Trail members offered information about the muscle-powered trail, VCHS Cheerleaders operated an old fashioned carnival game booth, club members allowed children to decorate cupcakes to take home with them, health department and Girl Scout representatives also held activity and information booths for area children.

An inflatable jump and slide attraction was offered throughout the day, courtesy of Central Elementary School. The Kiwanis Club wished to thank all of those who donated school supplies for the event: Dave Stiffler Jr. Friends of the Library, Circle of Ruth church group, VFW Post #5299, John Carey, and residents who dropped off supplies in donation barrels.

The Kiwanis Club is now preparing for the "Scaregrounds" haunted event, which is co-sponsored with the VCHS Athletic Boosters, and the Fair Board. This October event will feature a scary wagon ride through the grounds for older children and adults, as well as a fun Halloween activity area for younger children. The Kiwanis Club meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at the McArthur Fire Department Hall at 6:30. New members are always welcome. Honorary members do not pay dues, and can attend meetings as often as they can, and/or be involved in special events and projects. Standard members pay dues, can vote at meetings, or hold an office.
