It used to be
that when you drove down the road
You never really felt
truly alone
Across the dark black tar
through rain or shine
or night or day
or through the
blank canvas zipping by
You always had a knight
just over the horizon
around the bend
within a shout
there to watch over you
It used to be
that if you got a flat or
Ran out of gas or
broke your chariot in any way
Anywhere '''' any time --
on the highway
or the byway
or the back road
or the dirt road
or near home
There was always a Knight
who stood guard
though not his job
just because
he was needed
But now 'used to be'
is no more
Now you are alone
even in a sea of humanity
That zips along
to work
to home
to grandma's
to no place in particular
Now the Knight is no more
not over the horizon
nor around the bend
not within a shout
no one left watching over you
Used to be is past
and the world speeds by
Run out of gas
run out of luck
Break down or a flat
do it yourself
call a tow truck
on a highway or byway
on back road or dirt
fend for yourself
Now the Knight is replaced
by a worker drone
bound by rules
bound by law
on a tight schedule to survive
Now it is the Knight who is no more
Now it is night not Knight
Now
it
is
night
on the open road
And -- with a sadder sound --
we are alone -- once more
