REQUIREMENTS:
- Four 50 gram skeins of Festive Fun Fur from Lion Brand Yarn.
- (2 black and 2 gold) three skeins for a solid color scarf size 10.5 knitting needle (I prefer a 16 inch circular needle)
- 1 stitch marker
- 1 yarn needle to sew in ends
- Scissors to cut the thread
NOTES:
1. This scarf looks like the "potato chip" scarf but is worked over only 10 stitches using a short row technique. Of course to make an equivalent length requires several pattern repeats.
2. I am short and a taller person might want to make the scarf longer and would therefore use additional yarn, but probably not more than 4 skeins total.
3. I have also made this scarf out of a bulky weight washable yarn using larger needles and more stitches.
4. Festive Fun Fur is a glittery yarn which costs over $6.00 a skein. Fun Fur is a non-metallic yarn at around $2.00 a skein. The price should help you be sure that you have the yarn that I used.
5. More stitches produced a wider swirl.
6. When I store this scarf I carefully wrap the circles around on top of each other and place it in a round wooden box which is just the right size.
7. This glittery yarn hides lots of mistakes, but it is easy to lose track of stitches when you work with it, so count your stitches often.
8. While writing this I have had a serious case of poison ivy and all mistakes are due to that. Nice to have something to blame it on.
TECHNIQUE:
Short Row Technique: (SR) Knit number of stitches specified. Bring the yarn to the front and slip the next stitch, slide the stitch marker off, move the yarn to the back and return the stitch to the left hand needle. Bring the yarn back to the front (you have encircled the stitch) and replace the stitch marker. Turn the work and knit back.
DIRECTIONS:
Cast on 10 stitches using your favorite method. I prefer e-cast on because you don't have a long tail of yarn to sew in later. All stitches are knitted.
Row 1: Slip outside stitch as if to purl, Knit 7, SR (place marker this row), Knit 8
Row 2: Slip outside stitch as if to purl, Knit 6, SR, Knit 7
Row 3: Slip outside stitch as if to purl, Knit 5, SR, move, Knit 6
Row 5: Slip outside stitch as if to purl, Knit 4, SR, Knit 5
Row 7: Slip outside stitch as if to purl, Knit 3, SR, Knit 4
Row 8: Slip outside stitch as if to purl, Knit 2, SR, Knit 3
Row 9: Slip outside stitch as if to purl, Knit 1 SR, Knit 2
Row 10 Slip outside stitch as if to purl, remove marker, wrap around the next stitch and knit the edge stitch.
Row 11: Slip 1 stitch as if to purl, Knit the 9 stitches that were circled, back to the inside.
Change Thread Row. (The first time you do this simply tie the new thread to the old thread through the first stitch in a surgeons knot after that knit the inside stitch holding both threads together) Turn, Slip the first stitch with two threads and knit 9 stitches to the outside. This stitch will always have two threads and will be stronger.
Repeat these rows until you reach an appropriate length for the person who will be wearing it.
You will end up with pie shaped wedges of differing colors.
Bind off after row 10 (from the outside to the inside) in your usual manner and cut the threads pulling them through the final stitch. Using the needle weave the threads at both ends into the work.
