You Can Make This Afghan in a Single Weekend

Mary Gindling
Who doesn't love a nice, warm afghan on a cold winter's day? This beautifully textured pattern is so quick to make that you don't have to start it in the spring to be sure it's ready for fall. It's made of a great wool-acrylic blend yarn that is machine washable and dryable for easy care.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials:

6 - 5-ounce balls Lion Brand Wool-Ease Chunky Yarn (the model was made with Color No. 135 Spice)
1 pr knitting needles size 13
Yarn needle

Finished Size: 40 inches x 60 inches

Gauge:

5 sts = 2"
2 Rows = 1"

Note: The stitch used in this afghan is called trinity or blackberry. It is commonly used in Aran knitting.

Abbreviations:

k = knit
p = purl
kpk = knit, purl, knit into same stitch (knit into front of stitch, purl into back of same stitch, then knit into front of same stitch. Remove all stitches to right hand needle at once, letting the foundation stitch fall from needle.)
tog = together

Instructions:

Cast on 103 sts.
Rows 1 and 3: purl
Row 2: *P 3 tog., kpk into next st*. Repeat to end of row, ending with p 3 tog. Turn. (Note: There are two stitches fewer at the end of this row than the other rows. This resolves itself at the end of Row 4.)
Row 4: *kpk into first st., p 3 tog*. Repeat to end of row, ending with kpk into last st. Turn.
Repeat Rows 1 through 4 until piece measures 60 inches. Bind off.
Use yarn needle to weave in loose ends of yarn.

    Can I use circular needles with the KPK stitch?? I am about to experiment with mine but thought I would ask since I don't have 13's in circulars yet... only smaller sizes... Thank you!
