The first thing that you will need to decide is what size of slippers you want to make. In order to decide this you should use the following gauge: 22 stitches by 25 rows = 5 inches.
Once you have measured out the right amount of yarn, you will want to hold two strands. Whenever you are making slippers for a one-year-old you will want to start with knitting one stitch in the first row, two stitches in row two, then purl 20 before knitting two more stitches. You will want to repeat rows one and two until you have a piece that measures 2.5 inches and ends with a wrong-side row. Continue with stockinet stitch until you have a piece that measures 4.5 inches and ends with a wrong-side row. The next row will consist of two stitches together across 12 stitches. You will then want to purl in the following row, making sure to leave a long enough tail to be able to thread it through the remaining stitches and pull it tightly to secure it.
Whenever you finish the slippers you will want to fold the piece in half so that you can sew the back seam. You will then want to sew the top seam up to the knit stitches. Make sure that you leave a 2.5 inch opening though.
Now you can make four ears - two for on each slipper. In order to make an ear you will need to hold two strands of yarn together and cast on five stitches. You will need to knit six rows like this. In the next row you will want to knit two stitches together then knit one stitch, then two stitches. Finish by binding it off. These ears should be sewn onto the front of each slipper, then add a button for a nose.
At this point you will want to make two tails. For each of the tails you will need to hold two strands of yarn together and cast five stitches, making sure to bind off all stitches. These tails should be sewn onto the back seam of each of the slippers and the ends will need to be woven.
