Knocked Up: A Disappointing Movie

Brian Munger
I remember when the movie "Knocked Up" came out in theaters and how I was so excited to go see it. However, this thing called life got in the way and I was never able to make it out to the theaters to watch it. I was thoroughly upset at myself for not making it to the theater, but hey, I knew it would be on DVD and HBO soon enough, so I patiently waited.

I am not one that normally buys DVD's, so I waited for it to be aired on HBO. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, I was finally able to see Knocked Up on HBO approximately three weeks ago.

I anxiously sat on my couch with a bowl of popcorn, anxiously waiting to allow myself to let out a barrel of laughs. After all, this movie was directed by Judd Apatow, who is the same person that was responsible for the pee-your-pants comedy, "40 Year Old Virgin."

I'm sad to say that the barrel of laughs never came to be. There were approximately six parts in the movie that were worth laughing over, four of which were revealed in the previews.

Honestly, this was not a bad movie. It's a great romantic comedy with a meaningful plot, but I stress the word ROMANTIC. There was more sap than comedy. Hey, that's not always a bad thing, but I felt I was very deceived by the previews. When they showed the previews and trailers, they were sure to stress to us that this movie was made by the same person who directed the 40 Year Old Virgin. Plus, they only showed the silly clips in the previews. They gave every indication that this was going to be a goofy and silly movie, with just a hint of plot to save face. That was my take, anyways. But the truth of it was that it was more of a romantic/sappy plot with a just a hint of comedy to make some money.

Another thing I don't like about this movie is Seth Rogen. I actually think Rogen is a great actor and he did a stellar job in the 40 Year Old Virgin. He did great as a sidekick in that movie; however, he is not meant to be a leading man. He lacks the charisma and personality to keep me entertained as the lead man. I feel like I'm watching Robin become Batman when I see Seth Rogen as the lead actor. Plus, he has sort of a dry feel to him, which is funny at first, but can eventually become tiresome if you have to watch him for nearly two hours straight.

So, if you are a big comedy fan and are looking for some comical DVD's to add to your collection, I strongly recommend that you pass on this one. This movie is more "cute" than it is "funny." Seriously, who likes "cute" when they are watching a comedy? I know I don't!

My recommendation to the directors and producers of Knocked Up is to bring back the silly and to put Seth Rogen back in the passenger's seat - not the driver's seat.
