It's always necessary to observe the person carefully and identify the symptoms before claiming him/ her to be a patient of bipolar disorder.
Bipolar disorder doesn't involve the unusual behaviors that comes from the rush of blood. It's not unusual at any sense that, when we get angry or extremely emotional with something we can behave differently. To diagnose someone to be suffering from Bipolar disorder we need to be sure that he is engaged into the 4 episodes of that disorder. Here are the 4 episodes of the disorder-
1. Major depressive stage or episode:
A depressed person can be identified by the following symptoms.
• Persistent feeling of emotions such as anger, anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, isolation or inferiority complex.
• Sleep disturbance associated with lose of appetite.
• Lethargic appearance, fatigue and restlessness.
• Lack of interest in day to day activities even though the work isn't really boring.
• Self isolation and loneliness.
• Loss of sexual urge
• Shyness, hesitation and social awkwardness
• Chronic pain.
• Morbid or destructive thinking, suicidal tendency.
If the person shows these symptoms and he doesn't receive proper medication chances are there for him to go psychotic. We need to ensure them the psychological support they need.
2. Manic stage or episode:
People suffering from manic episode of bipolar disorder often experience and elevated mode or irritable or expansive state of mind. They are usually over excited as always and they suffer from sleep disorder.
They will always talk fast reflecting that their thoughts are even pressured. Restlessness is quite common in this case. The person feels it difficult to concentrate and he can be easily distracted as well. Ability to judge things will be hampered as well.
A manic person may become dependent on drugs. Drug abusing is quite common with them. Stimulants, depressants and sleeping pills are the commonest drugs that they got indulged into. These signs are accompanied by grandiose or delusional ideas. If its persistent the person may become a sufferer of psychosis. At this level they perceive fantasy more than reality.
3. Hypomanic stage or episode:
These patients show the same symptoms as those in manic episode. The only difference is that, the symptoms aren't that severe like manic stage. A person in hypomanic episode may often experience sudden spur of emotion, say for example, bursting into a laugh over a shallow reason.
Hypomanic episode may last for a short period of time. The intellect of the person, artistic thinking, and fight of ideas or over energetic feeling can also be observed.
4. Mixed stage or episode:
The name says it all. This is a combination of Manic and depressant episodes. Therefore the symptoms someone shows will also vary.
Knowing about the episodes of Bipolar disorder is imperative to diagnose the disease at an early stage. And the earlier bipolar disorder is identified the more treatable it is.
