Hello, I work in the credit industry and see people's credit scores every day! I sell both manufactured and modular homes and have helped a lot of people manage their credit using this method.
A Fair Credit Reporting Act was signed into law by Bill Clinton to ensure that consumers could fight any identity theft or if they had reason to believe there was unfair information on their credit report. All three credit companies; Equifax, Experian and TransUnion by law have thirty days to verify disputed information on your credit report after you submit your complaint. If they can not verify the disputed information from the creditors after thirty days they have to actually delete that information from your credit report by law!
This can work for anything on your credit report but understand that by doing this it does not erase any debt or monies owed to any person, company, or line of credit you have open. Also note that any company at any time may just randomly report your delinquent account and it can show back up on your credit any time. This is just to fix your credit scores on paper, not to erase any debt of any sort.
Your first free step is to go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp. Here you can pull a credit report every year or once every twelve months free of charge. You just have to answer some personal questions about yourself and then you are on the way! If you can not pull your credit report for free you can also pay to have you credit report ran from one of the three credit companies. It's always best to pull your credit from all three companies because each one can report different information.
Once you have your credit report you will see a list of good accounts and bad accounts. Obviously anything bad on your credit report you are going to want to dispute. Any late payment or bad debt will count against your credit scores. One late payment won't kill you but they will add up! You can dispute your bad credit online at each of the Equifax, Experian and TransUnion's websites by following the instructions on their disputing processes. You can also write them to the addresses provided in your credit report. Most people choose to write them which is fine, but doing it online will be free postage and you can track the progress of your disputes at anytime!
Some people like to dispute their credit report in writing. What you need to do is make three copies of the page you are wanting to dispute from your credit report. After you make three copies of that page, or pages, you need to highlight or circle the accounts you are going to refer to in your letter. Next you are going to need to write one letter explaining something like this;
"(Date) - Don't forget the date because they have 30 days by law remember!
Dear (creditor name here), (one for each creditor separately.)
I recently had my credit scores pulled at (business name) because (give any reason here like buying a house, car, or just to check it, ect.) and the following listed account(s) I would like to dispute because I do not believe them to be mine nor do I remember ever having a line of credit with any of these companies. I have listed the names and accounts listed below and I have also enclosed the pages with the accounts (circled or highlighted) so you can see them better as to the ones I am disputing.
Account Number Creditor
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Jerry's Used Ford Cars
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Citi Bank Credit Card
ect. ect.
Thank you very much for your time,
(First and Last name)
(Sign here if you did this on a computer.)"
A few weeks after you send out the letters you will receive a letter as to what accounts are being disputed from the credit companies. Even though the credit companies have thirty days to verify your disputes it can take up to forty five days to receive the follow up letters stating which accounts on your credit report have been removed and which ones were verified. If an account was verified that means it will not be deleted form your credit report. If that does happen all you have to do is repeat the whole process to the verified accounts you want to dispute again. Eventually they will be taken off your credit report.
Good luck to you and your new found credit!
