Knowing the Signs of Equine Colic

Dougie Lloyd
Anyone who chooses to buy a horse for whatever reason needs to take care of that animal just like any other pet. Horse owners should pay extra attention when caring for a horse because a horse just like any other animal can get sick from various diseases. Some things that can make a horse become ill could be caused by parasites or from the food that the owner may be feeding the horse. Just like any other living creature the only way to treat these problems is by taking the horse to a professional and get it treated.

The one thing that a horse owner should be aware of is Equine Colic. Equine Colic can cause a horse to die if it is not properly treated. Equine Colic is not hard to recognize if the owner knows what to look for and I would like to talk about some of the things horse owners should watch out for, and if the owner notices any of the following symptoms they should call a veterinarian immediately for treatment.

1). If the owner notices the horse feeling restless or the horse is just acting weird, this could be an indication that the horse could have Equine Colic. The owner should keep a close eye on the horse to make an assessment because it may be possible that the horse was just frightened by something.

2.) Sometimes a horse will stand or lie down and kick its belly. A horse will do this much like humans do when they hold on to a part of the body when they are in pain. The owner should take the animal somewhere that has more space so that the horse doesn't cause further damage to the stable or to the horse itself.

3.) If the owner sees their horse lying on the ground there is no need for concern because this is normal since this is how the animal sleeps. If the owner notices however that there are no changes in the horses position from the last time the owner seen the horse, this could also be an indication that the horse may have Equine Colic.

4.) If the owner sees the horse standing up in good posture does not really mean that the horse doesn't have a problem. For this reason is why a lot of owners will check the horses teeth and other physical features because the horse may be acting normal on the outside, but the horse may really have problems on the inside that the owner may not be aware of.

Any of the 4 symptoms listed above can occur 1 at a time or the symptoms can occur simultaneously, but either way if the owner notices any of these symptoms they should immediately call their local veterinarian and get proper treatment. Anyone who owns a horse should read up on the symptoms of equine colic and other diseases so they can be well informed of the dangers so their horse can live a long productive life.
