Knowing from Whence Our Help Comes Psalm 3:3

One of my favorite Christian recording artists, Casting Crowns, recorded a song called "Praise You In This Storm". I loved this song even before I began to realize the stormy seasons in my life. The chorus speaks to me the same way Psalm 3:3 does:

"I'll praise You in this storm

And I will lift my hands

For You are who You are

No matter where I am

Every tear I've cried

You hold in Your hand

You never left my side

And though my heart is torn

I will praise You in this storm"

I can only imagine this is exactly how King David felt when he penned verse three of this psalm. David knew the LORD was still with him, protecting him. God is still with us in the midst of our storms. Often times we forget this while we are "going through".

Psalm 3 was written while David was on the run from his own son, Absalom, who wanted to kill his father and take his place as King of Israel. If David wanted to he could have fought his son head on and would have prevailed because David still had God's favor. However, David loved his son very much and did not want him dead. In fact when Absalom was killed, David grieved greatly over his son.

David knew God was protecting him during this storm brought on by his son. David knew he was the LORD's chosen and he stood firm on this knowledge. David knew he had a loving relationship with God and still continued to acknowledge him for the awesome God YHVH is.

It would be nice if we all had this faith, had built up a relationship so strong with God that we trusted Him completely and stood firm on it. It is not impossible for us to have this relationship with God. The more we commune with the LORD in study of His Word, obedience, prayer, and just simple conversation with Him, the closer we get to the LORD. Our relationship with him strengthens where we feel His presence more and become more open to hear him respond back to us.

Not even our storms can separate us from God's love.

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?" - Romans 8:35 KJV

However, to prevent our storms from taking our focus away from God we still need to praise Him at all times.

"Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." I Thessalonians 5:16-18
