Knowing Where to Start when Choosing an Assisted Living Home in New York City
The First Steps You Should Take in This Difficult Process
Begin your search for an assisted living home by writing down exactly what you need from the assisted living home and staff. Will your elderly family member need medical care while there? What about any personal assistance throughout the day such as brushing their hair or bathing? Do they have any loss of memory? Can they walk or do they use a wheel chair or walker? These are all very important considerations. You will also need to think about what their future care may need. Perhaps they are in the beginning stages of a disease such as dementia that will continue to progress. You may need to plan a visit with their doctor so you can understand their future needs.
Once you have established what you and your family member will need from the assisted living home, you have to determine what your budget is. Although it is hard to put a limitation what kind of facility and care you can pay for, the reality is most of us will have to. Most assisted living options can cost anywhere from about $1700 a month to as high as $3500. While a higher price may not mean better care it will usually mean nicer surroundings. Most assisted living homes have extra charges for extra services. The before mentioned prices are sort of the basic care and meals. Will you need to have employees administer treatments, pay for transportation to medical faculties, or pay for home care when they spend a few nights with you. These are all factors that can quickly add thousands on to the bill.
Just knowing where to start can head you in the right direction. New York City is full of assisted living options. You should plan on visiting quite a few of them before you make a final decision. Just remember to keep a list of your favorite options incase your first choice is full or you find that it is not working out.
