Knowledge is Only One Reason to Donate to Wikipedia

Because knowledge uplifts, and because it is free on Wikipedia, humankind is enlightened by great contributions from all over the world. Wikipedia is seeking donations at this time, and here is a philosophy along with few facts to provide a reason to give.

Wikipedia is the electronic version of a library with magnificent volumes of encyclopedic information. It is a goldmine of knowledge freely available to anyone who is searching for answers on the net.

Utopian dreamers like Jimmy Wales, and Erich Schmidt created this literacy enhancing method of providing Wikimedia's huge gamut of educational material around the globe.

From Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia:

"Most people don't know this, but I'm a volunteer.
I don't get paid a cent for my work at Wikipedia, and neither do our thousands of other volunteer authors and editors. When I founded Wikipedia, I could have made it into a for-profit company with advertising banners, but I decided to do something different."

Here in the United States, we may tend to take literacy for granted. But imagine struggling school systems in third world countries where students rely on word of mouth information. Imagine a school with literally no textbooks. The remedy for this kind of poverty exists and everyone of us can help it along.

On a daily basis, more translation programs become available and in turn Wikimedia provides an abundance of information globally. Wikipedia will soon be for all people someday in the future.

Though many people criticize the open contribution methods of Wikipedia, through personal investigation and checking of facts, the findings are that the error factor is truly marginal. More than this, anyone who finds an error has an immediate place to submit corrections.

When looking for information, it's always a good idea to double check the facts. As an avid reader, I have found that many sources of information contain error, or misguided perceptions due to wording. The human error factor is everywhere in the written word, though.

More Reasons to Give

The spirit of sharing comes to pass through the magic of perceptions displayed in photography, reproductions from great world museums, literature, and other contributions which help make the world a better place.

And people are creating Wikipedia together with a common, heartfelt caring. It's a kind of caring that threads throughout an unseen bond. Many souls throughout the world join in a common goal of good intentions directed toward uplifting all of humanity.

Wikipedia is there for everyone, and because it is donation based, it is a constant reminder of something that's good in the world.

Keeping this mind, anyone can use imagination and travel the world, or outer space, or investigate the microscopic world of living organisms.

Mathematics on this information site also provides equations as a stepping stone to research, education and innovation. Science and technology are here, too.

Wikipedia is a place to go to counteract the negativity of news headlines that tell of tragedy, sadness, and the undesirable factors of the human condition.

The free provision of information is what this organization is about. It's about heart and soul, and so is donating to help it grow and continue in the multifunctional media world that Wikipedia is. Check the resource box for Wikimedia Foundation's - a donation of even five dollars multiplied makes a big difference.

I challenge anyone who has made at least $5 on articles that have included info from wikimedia or a picture from wiki commons to use their PayPal account to donate something. Also, for those who have not been plagued by encyclopedia salesmen for years, contribute "because."It is the guide to point those who want more info in the right direction :)

    David,

Long ago, I came to the conclusion that only a third of published information that I've read is reliable. Almost every presented fact has an equal and opposite fact somewhere else. It's always prudent to double check information from any source.

I would add this - all the more reason to donate to Wikipedia to insure that the validity of information there can hold up under "objective scrutiny" as David states. Cheers ;)

It IS a good cause... more and more people depend on it though some of the information it includes does not hold up well under more objective scrutiny.
