Knoword: An Online Word Game

Timothy Liu
Knoword is the name of a website dedicated to an online word game, the copyright of which goes to Trevor Blades. The location of this online game is www.knoword.org.

Gameplay

The goal of Knoword is to correctly guess words. Players are given nothing more than the first letter of the word that they are trying to guess, along with the definition and part of speech of the word. Generally speaking, the definitions will include multiple definitions of the same word to help players identify the correct word.

When a player thinks he or she knows what the correct word should be, he or she can type in the word. The game will go on the the next word automatically if the word entry is correct. The player does not need to press Enter or Space or anything to submit the word, as the word is submitted automatically. This allows for a smooth flow to the gameplay.

To make the game challenging, players start the game with a one minute countdown timer. When a player guesses a word correctly, he or she will not only gain points but also gain a small time extension. Thus, it is important to be quick with your mind in order to keep playing and rack up points.

If a player guesses a certain number of words correctly in a row, then he or she will be awarded medals that add additional points to the player's score.

There are two language settings for this word game so far. The two language settings are English (U.S.) and English (Canada/Britain).

This online word game also includes three different game modes. The three different game modes are listed as Season 1 (Normal), Season 2 (Normal), and Season 3 (Hard). As far as I know, the language settings and game mode settings are the only two settings that players can tweak at the moment.

Players are encouraged to sign up for an account on Knoword's homepage website in order to keep track of their games, their medals, their player rankings, and so forth.

There are other perks that come with being a Knoword Member. These include:

- no advertisements to distract you when you are trying to figure out a difficult word

- a record of achievements

- suggesting words to be used in the game

- saving language settings so you do not have to tweak the settings every time you start a game
