Kodak's ESP-5 All-in-One printer: Finally, a Printer with Affordable Ink Cartridges

John Messina
Kodak has recently released their all new ESP-5 All-in-One printer. This printer has a small sleek design that's also a copier, and scanner. This printer also has a 3 inch color LCD display that lets you view, edit, and print photos without the use of a computer.

The most important feature of this printer is Kodak's high-quality pigmented inks that come in a two cartridge system. One is the black ink cartridge and the other is five ink color cartridge. The black ink cartridge only cost $9.99 and the color cartridge is $14.99.

The following is Kodak's comparison between their ink cartridges and a standard inkjet ink cartridge. For every $5.00 of ink you spend this is what you can print:

Kodak black text documents you will print on average 221 pages at 2.3 cents per page compared to a standard inkjet printer printing 77 pages at 6.5 cents per page.

Kodak color graphics and text documents you will print on average 73 pages at 6.9 cents per page compared to a standard inkjet printer printing 38 pages at 13.3 cents per page.

Kodak 4 x 6 color photos you will print on average 52 photos at 10 cents per photo compared to a standard inkjet printer printing 18 photos at 28 cents per photo.

As you can see from this comparison this printer will pay for itself just in printing quantity and ink cartridge replacements alone.

Some of the other great features of the Kodak ESP-5 printer include the 3 inch color LCD, memory card and USB slots to view, edit and print without a computer.

This printer also has an intelligent paper sensor that will automatically adjust settings based on paper type. If you use the Kodak photo paper, this printer will recognize the exact paper type and optimizes settings to print a perfect photo every time.

With Kodak's Easyshare Software image enhancement and editing tools you can restore old photos, brighten images, reduce red eye, and reduce the appearance of skin blemishes with the enhance facial features and retouching.

This All-in-one also scans and copies in color or black and white. Printer can print up to 30 ppm in black and white and 29 ppm in color.

This printer also incorporates Bluetooth Wireless Technology so that you can print directly from any desktop or laptop with Bluetooth capability. Just remember that the distance for Bluetooth enable devices is only about 25 feet.

The ESP-5 sells for $169.99 (MSRP) and is well worth the price.

Stay as far away from this product as you can. I wish I could give it a rating of negative 100. It's not a printer, it's a jamming machine. The first one I received did nothing but suck up as many as 6 pages at a time and wrap them around the roller. Even the software installation was horrendous with multiple error messages. Kodak sent me a second one, which turned out to be a refurbished model, not a new one which I had paid for. It was just as bad as the first, and never printed anything. Any page fortunate enough not to jam came out as it went in - blank. A new printhead, new cartridges, diagnostic reruns and multiple downloads of the software, failed to solve the problem. This printer should be recalled, and if Kodak has any integrity, the comany should refund the money to anyone duped into buying it. Before purchasing this printer, Google 'Kodak ESP5 printer reviews' and read what other buyers have to say about this worthless heap of junk.

Wow sounds good! Can I use it to add hair to my head in photos? "I'm not balding under this hat, really, look at these pics!"
