Kodu: Where You Imagine and Create Your Own Games
The Software that is Meant to Teach While Having Fun
In detail, the Kodu software was built with a language-friendly programming for video games, and simple icon-based features. Players can choose between 20 different characters that range all the way from flying a saucer to directing a submarine. The platform is complemented by an interactive editor which is in charge of building the field or stage of the game, generating bridges and roads, and many other tools to design a whole new environment. Furthermore, the user has the option of using pre-designed worlds.
Instead of using a complex programming language, Kodu enables and allows new developers to link icons easily and in an intuitively way so they can define the rules of the game they are creating.
The vision of this project is ahead of its time and the ultimate goal is to make the Kodu PC look more attractive for educational purposes and to create a more appealing environment. With the Kodu there is no need for drivers or other special equipment. Students can quickly begin to build games with only a computer a mouse and a keyboard.
The idea is to introduce children to programming and support their learning in areas such as design, mathematics and increasing their problem solving skills, says its creator, Matthew MacLaurin, director of IC in Redmond (Future Social Experiences).
Two years ago, MacLaurin and his team set-through the basics of programming, teaching young people how they can create new worlds just by using your imagination. Today, Kodu is a success on Xbox LIVE and is being used in over 60 educational institutions around the world to introduce children to programming.
