Kris Allen Album Released and it Disappoints

Lack of Musical Branding Makes "Kris Allen" Just Another Album, Not a Statement

Mary Zeiher
Kris Allen was on Good Morning America this morning to promote the release of the his self-titled album "Kris Allen". I think naming an album after yourself no matter how big the star, just shows a lack of imagination and edge for the musician. That is certainly the case for Kris Allen and this new album.

Kris Allen's album is being released today and it is, in so many words, ho-hum. The music is nice and easy to listen to, but it is just a little boring - ok, a lot boring. Now before too many Allen fans get mad at me for this, I really do wish Kris Allen all the best in his post-Idol career. But this album is not going to get that Kris Allen career going in high gear.

Kris Allen had help on the album from some pretty talented people such as Greg Kurstin of the Bird and the Bee, Joe King of the Fray and Mike Elizondo. Kris Allen, the 24 year-old American Idol winner, helped to write nine of the thirteen tracks on the "Kris Allen" album.

Now the song Kris Allen performed this morning on GMA, "Live Like We Are Dying" is nice enough, it has a lovely rhythm to it and a nice beat. A couple other tracks on the album that I kind of liked were "Can't Stay Away" and "Before We Come Undone". Both songs are pretty upbeat and I wish that Kris Allen would have chosen to do more songs like these.

But the rest of the album is just like schlepping through the All-American boy next door with a guitar soulful sound that doesn't really stand out. Kris Allen does not make a statement with his debut album. Kris Allen does not set his style of music nor does "Kris Allen" brand the Kris Allen label.

It's unfortunate, but of course comparisons will be drawn between the much flashier, and I think much more talented, Adam Lambert album release that will be happening in just a few days "For Your Entertainment". News has been flowing daily about the album and Adam Lambert is one the newest, and most stylistic, artist to hit the musical scene in a long time. While I will enjoy some of the music on Kris Allen's album, I will listen to a new musical era begin with the release of Adam Lambert's.

And a year and a bit later, Adam is taking the world by storm and Allen is reduced to playing a second rate fairs, and he didn't get a Grammy nom either. Allen fans should be ashamed of their bashing and concentrate on supporting Allen. The truth always wins out !!!

Did anyone notice that the blog is from L.A. Times...Glambert country. So is anyone really surprised that the writer has a hard-on for Lambert and a soar spot for Kris? Oh well, people still like the album.

Someone said that Adam Lambert is issuing out a "new era in music"...how old are you, 15? I believe Adam's era was in the late seventies and early eighties. What was it called again? Oh...Glam Rock. How original. Kris Allen isn't garnering the same attention as Lambert, because (what a shock) sex sells. It's the only thing actually selling music these days. Adam is so made for this generation's MTV, not rich in quality but bloated with quantity. Too much show and not enough music. Fortunately, those of us with any taste left in actual true musicianship and artistry will appreciate Kris Allen and others like him.

The title of Kris' album is A-ok with me. I've reviewed Kris' album and really like four of the songs. Also reviewed Adam's and liked only one although he didnt articulate all the lyrics well enought to know what they were. After the AMA's last night, Adam might find some cancellations of all the pre-orders for his album. He sucked on the AMAs pushing porn, not good music. Kris isnt selling sex, he's writing and performing music and I plan to buy his music as long as he keeps writing and singing.

What is slow means to you? Do you have any comparison?

It is my understanding through BILLBOARD that Kris Allen pulled more CD sales than Adam Lambert during American Idol.

The article is so true. Adam is starting a new music era. He is the first to do this exciting music...

You can tell whether someone is knowledgeable about music and appreciate music. You can also tell whether they made the effort to listen with an unbiased ear. The title alone..."it disappoints"...you mean it disappoints a sold-out Adam Lambert fan. Surprise surprise. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE ADAM...but I HATE when a person is allowed to review something they already didn't care about in the first place.

Why bother putting them away for the Grandkids? They'll be able to pick this album up for a quarter at their local thrift shop very soon.

I have to completely disagree with this review, he even sounds mean spitited which is sad. Kris Alen's album is AMAZING. But, I like souful music and powerful lyrics. If this is your thing, you will love it.Remember, 19 Records had a lot of say what went into this too, Kris did his best to keep his stamp on it. His sound is uniquely his own. I think Adam is a very sweet and interesting person, but I couldn't even get through the songs on his album, just not what I want to listen (or dance) to. People, buy and listen to what you like, but I really think you dissed Kris unfairly for this effort - he is very talented and this record will do well - it will be slow and steady like his Idol competition.
