Kris Allen and Keith Urban "Kiss a Girl" on American Idol Finale

Kris Allen Harmoniously Trades Verses with Keith Urban

The second part of the American Idol two-part finale Wednesday evening, the part billed as the show that would announce America's new American Idol, was loaded with A-list guest stars. Of course, the two finalists, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen sang with a few of them. But the first artist Kris Allen sang with -- country star Keith Urban -- couldn't have been a more perfect choice with which to perform a duet.

Singing "Kiss A Girl," which is currently climbing the Hot Country Songs Billboard chart and is at #5, Kris Allen and Keith Urban traded verses and sang together on the choruses. Being a huge Keith Urban fan, this writer was a bit surprised by the fact that newcomer Kris Allen seemed to sing the song just a tad better than the guy who wrote it. It was a great performance, lots of energy and their voices matching up nicely, both guys seeming to enjoy playing and singing together. But you could tell who the veteran performer was -- Kris looked a bit starstruck.

You know that the shy and humble Kris Allen never thought a year ago he would share the stage with one of country music's leading acts...

Keith Urban's new album, "Defying Gravity," was released on March 31 and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. He just won an Academy of Country Music award with Brad Paisley (who appeared on American Idol during "Grand Ole Opry Week") for Vocal Event of the Year for their duet, "Start a Band." He was asked to appear on American Idol and hot off of several sold-out shows (he's primarily touring with Taylor Swift this year), Urban dropped into Los Angeles to do the show. He'll pick up his tour again on May 28 in Chaleston, West Virginia, and continue touring through October.

If "Kiss A Girl" hits the top position, it will be Keith Urban's eleventh #1 single (including the aforementioned "Start a Band").

Getting to sing "Kiss A Girl" with Keith Urban wasn't the end of Kris Allen's night, though. He would sing part of "Smooth" for Carlos Santana, help all the Top 13 Idol guys sing Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" as an intro to the rock legend's own performance, and sing a "We Are The Champions" duet with Adam Lambert and Queen.

And if that weren't enough, Kris Allen was left nearly speechless when Ryan Seacrest named him the 2009 American Idol. All he could stammer out, a dazed look on his face, was, "I don't know what to say -- Adam deserves this."

Humble to the end...
