Kris Allen Shocks the World as He Upsets Adam Lambert to Win the 2009 American Idol Title

In what will be considered a huge upset, Kris Allen is your 2009 American Idol. There are plenty of reasons that this should not be such a surprise to people, but before we get into all of that, how about that show that was put on by American Idol on Wednesday Night! Some of the biggest names in the industry showed up and if your glory days were in the 1980's, you were in absolute heaven during this show.

It has been said all season long that this was probably the most talented cast that has even been on this show and if you weren't sure before, the performances on Wednesday night solidified it. The first exceptional performance had to be Lil' Rounds and Queen Latifah. The thought that came to my mind was where was this all season long? If Lil' had been doing songs like this, she would have easily made it to the final five and possibly deeper.

Next up were Kris and Keith Urban. I had never even thought about Kris doing Country before this performance, but I have to admit, it was probably one of the best fits of the season for him. He was very much at ease during the performance and actually seemed to be right in his element. Forgetting that he won the competition, it solidified the fact that this is someone that we are going to hear a lot about over the next few years.

Allison Iraheta was the one performer who continued to grow throughout the competition. She once again gave us a glance of what is to become when she teamed up with Cyndi Lauper for an incredible performance. When I first saw the pairing, I thought it was possibly an odd matchup, but you could see them feeding off of each other as the song progressed and Alison showed that she is 100% ready for the big time.

It would be criminal not mention the sing-off between Kara and Bikini Girl. As bad as "No Boundaries" was as a song, her performance was surprisingly that good. She also held her own in the wardrobe malfunction portion of the act. The best line of the night game from Ryan Seacrest when he said (to Bikini Girl), "I would ask you what's new, but I already know." When Kara ripped open her dress after she won her singing dual, she far from embarrassed herself. This is a family show though, so let's get back on track.

Danny Gokey ended up with Lionel Richie and someone knew what they were doing here. Danny opened up with a very touching solo and then Richie joined him for the next two songs. It was pretty apparent that he was having the time of his life and this was the Danny that American Idol nation came to know and love over the season. Other than Kris and Adam, this is the one that has the best shot of making an immediate impact on the music scene.

The next big act was a treat from my childhood days. I still remember combining my allowance money with a friend so we could buy a copy of KISS Alive. Adam took the spotlight with a tremendous version of "Beth" and I was instantly wondering if KISS was actually going to do American Idol. Adam had that sly little smile on his face at the end of the song and introduced the band with a perfect Gene Simmons imitation, "Its KISS." It is no secret that they are well past their prime, but their performances are still a ton of fun to watch. I don't know about you, but this alone made my night.

Hold on though, the superstars of rock and roll were far from done. The very next song allowed Matt Giraud to have the honor of singing with Carlos Santana. If you deny that "Black Magic Woman" is not the first choice of song that you attempted on Guitar Hero you are a liar. There was no better guitarist during that time and he still has game. This may have been the highlight of the night.

One last star hit the stage before the voting and I will be the first to admit that I had mixed feelings about his performance. Let's face it, Rod Stewart is OLD! He missed a note coming up to the mike and then almost fell flat on his face as he took a misstep. He actually hit a nice stride about halfway in, but he is definitely a shell of his former self. If you had ever seen him perform in his prime, you would have seen one of the most entertaining shows of any rock star of his time. But hey, it's still Rod Stewart and he is still out there doing his thing.

Now let's get back to the actual winner of the show. It was mentioned in a prior article that as more contestants fell to the wayside, Adam was going to have a problem fighting off his competitor. The fans of the other singers were teaming up to get him out as they had enough of the Adam Lambert supporters. There is no denying Adam's talent, but his following started to shake some trees and definitely created an anti-Adam sentiment across the country. If you read the comments and opinions in other articles, the attitude is quite apparent. Adam was the best and any other opinion was to be disregarded as idiotic and uneducated. Adam didn't lose this competition, his fans did.

However, you can still make the case the Kris won the last show and deserved to be the winner. He won the first round on just about everyone's card and while Adam took the second round, he clearly struggled with the now infamous "No Boundaries" that was written by Kara. In the end, it really doesn't matter. Both of these guys are going to be stars and Adam's future has been all but locked in from the very first show. It was a great season and the fans got it right with these two on the final show. Now we can sit back and enjoy their rise to stardom.
