Kris Allen Spins "She Works Hard for the Money" on AI Disco Night

Impressive Acoustic Performance from Kris Allen

Though I have praised Kris Allen in the past, I have never been a big fan. Allen keeps pulling me in on this season of American Idol. Just when I'm about to write him off as a bouncing ball of karaoke, he spins "She Works Hard for the Money". One of many Donna Summers hits from the 1970's, Kris Allen re-wrote it tonight.

Wearing just a plain white t-shirt and blue jeans, acoustic guitar around his neck, Kris Allen took the AI stage. He stood with a quartet of acoustic accompaniment including a bongo player. From the first note the song was unrecognizable from the original. In a genuinely great way. Kris Allen managed to turn disco into calypso and get a hit.

Kris Allen had the performance of the night again tonight. Though Adam Lambert got the highest praise as always, here is what the judges said about Kris' disco night performance:

Kara DioGuardi: "...you took a real risk, and let me tell you it paid off big time..."

Paula Abdul: "...it had a classy Santana feel to it... many women shop in the mens department, but not many men can shop in the women's. You did, and you found the perfect fit..."
This comment led Simon Cowell into a tizzy and the argument eventually devolved into whether or not Kris Allen wears ladies underwear...

Simon Cowell: "...that was a complete polar opposite to the first performance (Lil Rounds)... it was a fantastic performance..."

Randy Jackson: "...dude, you know who you are...this proves that you're ready for the big time..."

Though Simon and Paula started to act like smitten school children, Kris should take heart in the fact that he cheered them up. After a dismal beginning performance from Lil Rounds, Kris was certainly refreshing.

My favorite part of American Idol is watching a future star. When I see someone take a song and completely own it, it is a special performance. I think Kris Allen did this tonight and a few weeks ago with "Ain't No Sunshine". The problem Kris has is the pop idol genre. Every time he has performed a song remotely the same as it was recorded it has been pretty bad. Not awful, but very mediocre.

He gets a silly grin when sings, he gets pitch-y during songs, and the bouncing... the ever present bouncing. Even with all this, I think Kris Allen is a contender for the finals of American Idol Season 8.
The final three contestants should be: 3. Danny Gokey 2. Kris Allen and the next American Idol is... Adam Lambert.

It was this performance that made me think he had a chance at winning, and from here on in, he was going up hill all the way to his win!

Kris is brilliant at arranging songs so that they sound unique and very interesting. If he makes a song his own it really works for him.

My favourite Kris Allen song so far (by a mile)! Probably my favourite A.I song so far. I particularly loved his haunting ending & the parts where he played without the guitar (just with the drums), also where he sang more quietly. He kept the song interesting & sweet/sensitive. It's annoying that he did seem to do that so well in the Studio recording, the studio song was not as soft, interesting and varied/unique.

I was an Adam fan, but now I may be more of a Kris fan. I'm really looking forward to his next performances. The songs I like best by Kris are ones where the guitar is less prominent and you can really hear his voice - and also any song that he turns on it's head & arranges completely differently. There is a short clip on Youtube where he sings part of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and he does just that, and even though it is a corn
