The Runaways with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning

The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Dakota Fanning (Twilight), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), Stella Maeve, and Scout Taylor-Compton is a cinematic biography of the 1970s legendary all-girl rock band, The Runaways. The movie had a limited release on March 19, 2010, followed by its wide release in theaters on April 9, 2010, which was also Stewart's 20th birthday. The DVD release of The Runaways was July 20, 2010.

Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway by Cherie Currie

The screenplay is based on the book Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway by the band's original lead vocalist Cherie Currie and was produced by Runaways rhythm guitarist and vocalist Joan Jett. The movie covers the period from the formation of the band through the departure of Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) and the formation of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

The Runaways - History Buffs & Fans of Rock 'n Roll

A great movie for music history buffs and fans of rock 'n roll, The Runaways is a disturbing coming-of-age look at the life of the teenage girl musicians as they pop pills, drink, have sex, smoke, do drugs, experiment with more sex, pop a few more pills, and in the young Currie's case, have a breakdown or two along the way. However, it is an apparently authentic look at the way these talented young women were neglected by their families and exploited by their manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon)... and in the process, found fame and fortune (authentic, except perhaps in the way Joan Jett's and Cherie Currie's eye makeup stays on while they are in the tub and hospital, respectively).

Teen Runaways

The film begins in 1975 when Joan Jett (Stewart) at around age 17 is introduced to 16-year old drummer Sandy West (Stella Maeve) by Kim Fowley. Fowley then discovers 15-year-old Cherie Currie in a club and has her audition to be the blond lead singer, with every intention of sexualizing the young girl and exploiting her as "jail bait."

The Runaways Twilight Angle

It is hard to write about a movie with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in it without mentioning the Twilight series of movies since both The Runaways and The Twilight Saga: New Moon were filmed in 2009 with both actresses in starring roles. Twilight catapulted Kristen Stewart to success as Bella Swan and has added another notch to Dakota Fanning's belt as the evil, pain-inflicting Volturi vampire Jane. In The Runaways, Stewart shines as the assertive, edgy Joan Jett -- a radical departure from her Twilight/Adventureland persona. Fanning owns her role as the vulnerable, overexposed, overwrought Cherie Currie -- a character who could not be further from Twilight's cruelly cold Jane.

The Runaways - Takaways

Tatum O'Neal, who knows a thing or two about being talented, exploited and lost as a teen, plays Cherie Currie's mother, and Scout Taylor-Compton plays lead guitarist Lita Ford. The movie deals with adult situations, sex, drugs, alcohol, and bad language and is not suitable for young teens. The Runaways with Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Michael Shannon, Stella Maeve, and Scout Taylor-Compton releases on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States on July 20, 2010.

If people want to have a hissy fit about Dakota in a movie, I suggest they have the hissy fit over "Runaways" -- WAAAY more adult content than "New Moon/Eclipse!" Definitely NOT a movie for young teens.

I remember people having a big fit that Dakotah was going to be in the Twilight series. I saw "New Moon" Saturday and did not recognize the 'little girl'. Dakotah was the evil Jane. She's no longer a child.
