Kristin Davis, the Governorship of New York, and Reality

Luis Antonio
I just recently attended Kristin Davis' campaign kick off party in New York City. It was a very enjoyable and interesting occasion with a spectacular view of Manhattan through the panoramic windows of the 58th floor apartment. The guests represented a good cross section of New York Kristin supports and those interested in learning more about the woman who has thrown her hat into the New York State governor's race.

Kristin's arrival was marked, accompanied by her campaign manager Roger Stone, by a hail of photographers flashes as she made her way around the crowd graciously greeting each guest. The highlights of the event were speeches made by both Roger Stone and Kristin Davis explaining why she is running for governor and what circumstances brought them to this decision. The current politics of New York State is in need of "new ideas, interesting ideas, and provocative ideas" as stated by Roger Stone in his introduction speech for Davis. The question is; however, does the platform Kristin Davis presents give us the ideas we need and want for New York's political situation. Can legalizing gay marriage, marijuana use, and prostitution help New York State and become the reality Davis and her supporters want?

Homosexuality is a reality, and the fact that homosexuals want their relationships to be recognized as equal to heterosexual ones is not going away. It is simply a matter of equal rights. And in a country where this is promised to all...denying these rights to any group is a reality that must end. Can, and should, New York State take the lead in this matter? Are New Yorkers as progressive as they claim to be? Marijuana use in America is also a reality and is also not going away. If one does just a little research on the subject and realizes that hemp, and its use, was legal at one time in this country...more research will lead one to the real and questionable reasons why it is no longer a legal substance. Taxing marijuana will bring in much needed revenue to the State of New York. This is a fact that can not be denied. Its legalization is something to, at least, begin a serious discussion about.

Prostitution is a reality and has been around since the dawn of human civilization. Wrong or right, good or bad, moral or not, it exists. Managing it for the protection of those who participate in it, and taxing it will bring in revenue to the state. Just the simple act of testing those who participate in prostitution will reduce the spread of the HIV virus significantly. This is a reality, and the revenues gained by its taxation could help this one needed reality come true. It also has not been proven that legalizing prostitution will make the number of those participating in it increase or become more of a threat to married or other types of relationships. Participate in prostitution is a conscious choice, and if one does decide to do so they will have to consider the feelings of those they are involved with and if doing so will hurt those who have put their trust in them. Prostitution is not for all; however, legalizing it and taxing it will generate revenue and will help put into place measures that will protect those who do choose to participate in the activity. This is a reality.

So...is this a reality whose time has come? Is Kristin Davis and her campaign the reality that New Yorkers want for their state? With the ideas of Capitalism, Equal Rights, and Inclusion can Kristin Davis rally enough votes to make her platform a reality? The debate has begun. Only time will tell. I would like to thank event planner Amy Jacobsen and Kristin Davis for their hospitality.
