Krusteaz Classic Sourdough Bread Mix - Food Review

Lisa Riggs
One of my favorite lines of bread and dessert mixes is definitely Krusteaz. Their wonderful array of products makes whipping up a great side or sweet dessert a real snap. I recently spotted their Classic Sourdough Bread Mix on the grocery store shelf and was eager to give it a try. Here are my thoughts and opinions of this inexpensive boxed bread mix.

Krusteaz Classic Sourdough Bread Mix is packaged in a fourteen ounce box and retails for only $2.99 at most grocery stores and discount department stores that carry dry food items. Considering the fact that you can use your bread maker to bake a loaf of delicious bread that tastes like you mixed, kneaded and baked for hours, I feel that this price is definitely very reasonable.

The back of the box contains very easy to follow directions to use this mix whether you use a bread making machine, prefer to create your loaf by hand or prefer an artisan bread. I traditionally use my wonderful bread making machine to bake loaves of bread, so that is the method I will discuss. After pouring in one cup of water at room temperature, the entire packet of mix gets poured into the loaf chamber. To add the enclosed yeast packet, you must first use your finger to dig a shallow well in the mix. Care must be taken that the yeast and the water do not come into contact. This can negatively affect the end result. After all three ingredients are added, the machine gets closed and the appropriate settings are set on the machine. No further actions are needed. You simply walk away and in approximately three hours you have a loaf of bread that tastes like you slaved away on it all day.

Each one third cup of mix which translates into one slice contains one hundred and fifty calories. This includes twenty calories from Fat. There is two grams of Total Fat and no Saturated or Trans Fat in this product. There is also zero milligrams of Cholesterol, two hundred and twenty milligrams of Sodium and twenty eight grams of Total Carbohydrate in this serving size. Additionally, this bread mix contains one gram of Dietary Fiber, five grams of Sugar and five grams of Protein. This Sourdough bread mix contains no Vitamin A, Vitamin C or Calcium, but does offer six percent of the daily recommended value of Iron.

Those with allergy concerns should note that this product is made using equipments that is also used to manufacture other items containing wheat, milk, eggs, soy and tree nuts.

As soon as I tasted my first slice of bread made with Krusteaz Classic Sourdough Bread Mix, I was hooked. This product makes a delicious loaf of bread that has that unique sourdough flavor that is so enjoyable. The ends were very crusty and the inside was soft, chewy and very tasty. I will certainly be adding this variety of bread mixes to my list of favorites. I rate this boxed bread mix a very solid five stars.
