When the all-powerful Axe Gang begins terrorizing the lower-class inhabitants of a Chinese slum named "Pig Sty Alley" a trio of local Kung Fu experts fights back. Angered by the resistance, the gang enlists the help of several powerful warriors in an ensuing battle to eradicate the humble neighborhood and regain their insulted pride.
Kung Fu Hustle is post-modern parody at its best. Borrowing from both Eastern and Western cultures, Director Stephen Chow creates an effective kung fu comedy rife with martial-arts action and slap-stick antics which both entertain and intrigue. Chow's film takes you on a brilliantly structured emotional roller-coaster ride, combining the right mixture of action, graphic violence, and humor. The precise martial arts choreography of Matrix master Yuen Wo-Ping reaches unrivaled heights, bringing the action to an exciting apex. The masterful addition of humorous cartoon-like CGI effects helps to create a dynamic contrast of mood and atmosphere throughout the film.
Aside from being merely funny and action-packed, the film is also beautifully shot and edited. The Cinematography is vibrant and rich; capitalizing on a prominent Hong Kong visual style reminiscent of filmmakers Zhang Yimou and Wong Kar-Wai. The editing makes the film flow exceptionally well; maintaining its dramatic integrity throughout by emphasizing the action, emotions, and humor.
Kung Fu Hustle is a brilliant and entertaining film that truly sets Stephen Chow apart as a brilliant writer, director, and actor
