Kunjal Kriya is one of the six yogic purification practices done before asana and pranayama (breathing practices). It improves ones asana and pranayama (yoga) experience. The Yogic Kriyas or purification practices are six in number and hence they are named as Shad Kriyas. The Shad Kriyas are:
1. Neti is nasal cleansing process. Water poured into one nostril automatically comes out through the other. Sutra-neti, is an alternative to Jal Neti, where a fine thread is taken inside one nostril and then pulled out of the mouth through the throat.
2. Vamana Dhauti is the digestive system cleansing process by swallowing and re-gurgitating a fine piece of salt water soaked muslin cloth. It is very difficult to practice. Kunjal Kriya (alternate practice to Vamana Dhauti) is the digestive system cleansing process by drinking lukewarm salt water.
3. Nauli is the deep inhaling and exhaling process along with pulling of abdominal muscles.
4. Basti is large intestine cleansing and toning process. It involves drawing water in to the lower intestine via the anus and then expelling it (enema) using movements of your abdomen and diaphragm.
5. Kapalbhati is respiratory exercise for the abdomen and diaphragm.
6. Trataka is strengthening weak eye muscles, relieving eye strain and curing of eye disease. "Winkless gaze at a particular point." or looking at an object with awareness.
The Shad Kriyas are not usually taught in Yoga classes because the learners find it difficult to follow. Please don't venture the Yogic Kriyas by just studying a book or Website or a video. It is a warning. These Yogic Kriyas should be learned under the personal supervision of a Guru. But once learned the benefits are immense. Kunjal Kriya is being practiced for centuries by yogis in India and other Asian countries. Now it is getting more popular in the western countries. Yogic Kriya will take about thirty minutes initially and once perfected it will take only lesser time.
Kunjal Kriya. Why?
Kunjal Kriya is a beautiful oesophagus and stomach cleansing process. Kunjal Kriya will give a good idea about your eating habits and problems of your digestive system. I am sure that there will be amazing improvements in your appetite and eating practices and as a result good digestion will be established. It will bring out the undigested food and water. If your vomit is acidic taste and smells very bad then assume that all your toxins are coming out. Kunjal Kriya will neutralize acid balance in your stomach. Another important benefit is that your worms get evacuated and will be flushed out. I am sure your digestive system will be cleansed over a period of time.
How to do it?
Take six tumblers of drinking water. Take half tumble of water and add two spoons full of common salt (only crystal salt. Avoid Table salt) and mix it and filter it using a pure white muslin cloth. Mix the filtered salt water with lukewarm water. Just taste it. Is it mild warm and the mild salty taste? Take one tumbler first. You will feel thirsty. If you feel like vomiting, then take vomit. Drink all six tumblers of lukewarm salt water in quick succession.
Now What?
Stand up and bend a little forward. Keep your hands on your thighs. Take two of your fingers (before this cut nails of your fingers) inside your mouth and vomit, bending forward. Keep vomiting till your salt water comes out. People suffering from constipation or breathing problem may not get vomit quickly. Practice makes perfection. Once you are perfect then there is no need to use your fingers. You will vomit out even without inserting fingers in to your mouth.
Be Warned about Kunjal Kriya.

1. Kunjal Kriya should first be practiced under a trained yogic practitioner.
2. Kunjal Kriya can be practiced once a week.
3. Heart patients, and those having weak intestines as well as those suffering from sprue should not practice this.
4. Drinking Lukewarm salt water can be a problem with people having stomach ulcer. You may get burning sensation. If you want you can even reduce the amount of salt. If you are finding blood in your vomit do not continue.
5. People with breathing difficulties may feel heavy while vomiting. In case of difficulties they may stop this Yogic Kriya.
