K-W-L Model Discussion for Dennis Learns About Responsible Reporting Versus Tattling or Snitching

Class will discuss the K & W of the K-W-L Model at beginning of lesson: What do you know and what do you want to know about responsible reporting versus tattling or snitching? At the end of the lesson, they will close with the L discussion: What have you learned about responsible reporting versus tattling or snitching?

Step 1: Introductory discussion on Responsible Reporting versus Tattling or Snitching

A. Ask the K question of the K-W-L MODEL.

1. Teacher Says or Asks: This lesson is on RESPONSIBLE REPORTING VS. TATTLING OR SNITCHING.

For the K of the K-W-L MODEL, what do you KNOW about what is the difference between RESPONSIBLE REPORTING and TATTLING OR SNITCHING?

Students Respond:

* TATTLING or SNITCHING is when you are perhaps purposely trying to get another person in trouble for disrespecting you.

* RESPONSIBLE REPORTING is when you need help in taking care of yourself such as in using I Messages or when someone has brought a zero tolerance item to school such as a weapon of some type or illegal substance. You are helping the school and possibly even that person to not make a terrible mistake that might come back to haunt him or her always.

2. Teacher Says or Asks: For the K of the K-W-L MODEL, what do you KNOW about when it is a good idea to use Responsible Reporting by telling an adult about something you saw, heard, or experienced?

Students Respond: Accept Reasonable Answers.

B. Ask the W question of the K-W-L MODEL.

1. Teacher Says or Asks: For the W of the K-W-L MODEL, what do you WANT TO KNOW about what is the difference between RESPONSIBLE REPORTING and TATTLING OR SNITCHING?

Students Respond: Accept Reasonable Questions.

Step 7: Wrap-Up Discussion on Responsible Reporting versus Tattling or Snitching

A. Ask the L question of the K-W-L MODEL.

1. Teacher Says or Asks: For the L of the K-W-L MODEL, what have you LEARNED about what is the difference between RESPONSIBLE REPORTING and TATTLING OR SNITCHING?

Students Respond:

* TATTLING or SNITCHING is when you are perhaps purposely trying to get another person in trouble for disrespecting you.

* RESPONSIBLE REPORTING is when you need help in taking care of yourself such as in using I Messages or when someone has brought a zero tolerance item to school such as a weapon of some type or illegal substance. You are helping the school and possibly even that person to not make a terrible mistake that might come back to haunt him or her always.

3. Teacher Says or Asks: For the L of the K-W-L Model, what have you LEARNED about the many ways that someone can demonstrate Self Control?

Students Respond: Following rules of making certain that only one person talks at a time and that you do not put down others takes a lot of Self Control.

4. Teacher Says or Asks: For the L of the K-W-L Model, what have you LEARNED about the many ways that someone can demonstrate valuing and respecting others?

Students Respond: Make certain that you do not put others down and also that you actively listen to them when they speak.

5. Teacher Says or Asks: For the L of the K-W-L Model, what have you LEARNED about the many ways that someone can demonstrate valuing and respecting authority?

Students Respond: Pay attention to and follow the rules of the class. Another way to value Authority is to go to an adult to Responsibly Report things such as a student threatening to physically attack another or planning to bring a zero tolerance item to school, etc.)

6. Teacher Says or Asks: Imagine someone is putting you down or bothering you in some way. For the L of the K-W-L Model, what have you LEARNED about using an I Message to try to get them to stop? Be sure to put a "because" in there or give a good reason why you wish them to stop.

Students Respond:(Use the posted I Message Sentence Starters poster and give a variety of I Messages.)

For example:

I would appreciate it if ______________ because _____________ .

7. Teacher Says or Asks: In the story and the role-play, Dennis had been wondering about something lately. For the L of the K-W-L Model, what have you LEARNED about the answer that Dennis received?

Students Respond: Students Respond: Dennis found out that Responsible Reporting was a better alternative instead of Tattling or Snitching.
