Kyle's Corner (FYI) Engine Burning Oil: What to Do on the Cheap

Kyle Busch
It has not been 'fashionable'
to drive an older vehicle,
and especially one that is
beginning to burns oil.

However, in the current
economic environment
that includes an uncertain
job outlook, you might
want to drive your vehicle
bit longer.

What if you have a
vehicle that is starting
to burn oil?

The condition is likely
caused by worn engine
piston rings and/or valve
guides. Let's say you
want to avoid buying

another vehicle to save money, but you also do not want to spend money to have
engine work done.

What can you do to deal with an engine that burns oil? Well, consider using
a heavier weight oil such as 20W-50 in the summer and 10W-40 in the winter.
These oils are thicker and they will burn more slowly. Also, consider using a
quart or two of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer.

Lucas is quite expensive at about $23 per gallon. However, even adding
two quarts per oil change, you will be able to drive about 6000-8000 miles.
Additionally, since you are adding oil to the engine, you can extend oil
changes from say 3500 to 4500 or 5000 miles. This will help to offset the
cost of the oil and Lucas you put into the engine.

When a vehicle burns oil, it is especially important to keep some oil in the
truck, check the oil level frequently, and add oil when necessary. A low
oil level will wear the rings even more resulting in more oil being burned.

Hopefully, in a short time down the road, you will be able to buy another
vehicle. It might be an opportunity to get a more fuel efficient vehicle
that will save you money on gas for years to come.
