Kyle's Corner (FYI) Gas Prices, Thieves, and Thy Neighbor

If it isn't one thing, it's another! Catalytic converters are being thieved from vehicle because of the metal content. And as gas prices continue to climb, more and more drivers are filling the tank and driving off without paying. What is the world coming to?

I was at a gas station the other day, and they wanted everything but the kitchen sink on my check. A 'new policy' was the explanation (read between the lines - stolen gas is on the rise)!

In some states, police are stepping up patrols of convenience stores that sell gasoline.

USA Today reports that in Conover, NC, 280 gallons of fuel were siphoned from eight Penske

trucks at a rental facility. The owner spent over $3,000 on additional lighting, surveillance equipment, and security.

The newspaper reports that Rusk County, TX, police are investigating the theft of 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel from a construction contractor. The fuel was valued at $5,200.

Furthermore, USA Today reports that a San Diego resident and neighbors are working to put surveillance cameras outside their homes after thieves siphoned gas from four vehicles on Easter morning. It was the second time the resident was hit by fuel thieves. He is determined to catch them the next time.

As with all kinds of businesses, theft means higher prices for those who honestly pay for goods or services.

What can drivers do? Be sure to have locking gas caps. And what about counting the ways we can car pool and get to know thy neighbor?

After all, the misery of high gas prices loves company! And by working together, neighbors can save money.
