to say that the automotive
landscape is a changing.
As I have stated numerous
times, the very sand un-
derneath all automakers
has indeed shifted. And
where will it go from here?
That is the 64 billion dollar
(assuming we are talking
dollars) question!
A recent headline in "MG
Enthusiast" read, " Chinese
win MG trademark battle."
In a nutshell, the article
explained that the Chinese,
now owners of MG, had
finally removed a thorn
from their side. It was William Rley's (Rley's Sports and Racing Europe located in
Tebury, Wells) claim that he has the trademark rights for his car - the MG XPower
XV. Although the Chinese had purchased his company, he claimed that the Nanjing
Automobile Corporation (NAC) did not own the rights to 'his car.'
However, on February 19th, Judge William Bladbume ruled that the
NAC in fact did have legal claim to the MG rights, trademark, and
logos when it purchased the failed MG Rover in 2005. The judge ruled
that the British company was infringing on the name and that it has no
rule to use them. He further ordered Rley to stop using the MG name
and logo.
Why am I informing you of this as it is outside the United States? Well,
it might well be a forerunner of things to come as related to the auto in-
dustry on the other side of the Atlantic but also likely to some automotive
things in this country.
You can take it or leave it, however, my advice to auto enthusiast and
even those less than enthusiasts, is to develop a plan to obtain vehicles
that you really like for a reasonable price. Realize that the current
economic environment can indeed help you to make this happen.
The only thing that is certain in the auto industry is uncertainty
as well as change!
