Kyle's Corner (FYI) a Trunk with a New Opening

Kyle Busch
I recently did an article on the 2012 Audi A7 Sportback - a four-door hatch

that looks like a couple. BMW has its 5-Series Gran Turismo hatch and

similar offerings are provided by Mercedes, Toyota as well as Honda.

On the 5-Series Gran Turismo, the driver can choose to lift its smaller

trunk opening or the trunk and the entire rear window. See the slide

show below!

As I have written in the past, the Nissan Versa is a decent looking,

very functional and reasonably priced hatch. Additionally, a sedan

version of the Versa is also available.

Many of today's sedans have a very short rear overhang and a

small trunk opening. However, American drivers have not

customarily taken to hatchbacks. What could be done that

would add the usefulness of a hatch but with the look of a

sedan or coupe's trunk?

What if automakers took a sedan, for example the Nissan Versa,

and made the trunk to open at the top of the rear window (in other

words, rather than the trunk opening right behind the rear window,

the flat trunk lid and the rear window would be one piece. Thus,

the car would have the trunk shape that American driver's prefer

but the opening of a hatch.

See the Nissan Versa sedan in the slide show below, and imagine

the trunk opening at the top of the rear window.

It would be a look that American drivers' prefer and provide

maximum utility to boot!
